4v4 VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE RULES Teams A team will play with four (4) players on the court at a time. o A team can play with as few as three (3) players. A Co-Ed team will play with 2 women and 2 men. o A Co-Ed team may play with (3) players, but may not exceed more than 2 men. A team may start and play a game with as few as three (3) players. Teams will be limited to one (1) Club Volleyball players. Forfeits If three (3) players are not present at the scheduled start time it will be considered a forfeit. If the number of players drops below three (3) for any reason, except for an injury, the team will be forced to forfeit. Equipment Proper volleyball or closed-toe athletic shoes are required. Volleyballs will be provided for each game. Participants will not be allowed to play in street clothes. Only water is allowed in the Field House. Please no Gatorade, energy drinks, Vitamin Water, etc. Billed hats, braces, casts and/or any other item deemed dangerous by the Intramural Staff may not be worn. Jewelry is prohibited. Scoring for regular season 1 Game to 25, rally scoring Win by two, cap of 30. Rally scoring will be used for all games. Start of Game Teams will Rock, Paper, Scissor at the beginning of the game. The winning team will choose serve or receive. Substitutions and Rotations Teams are allowed to make as many substitutions as they would like. No player is considered “Backrow”, thus any player can attack from anywhere on the court. Serving All players must take turns serving. A player may not serve again until 3 other people (or as many people on the court) have served. Playing the Ball There is a maximum of three (3) hits allowed (intentional and unintentional). A touch off a block does not count as a touch. Players may not have successive contact with the ball, unless after a block. Players may use any part of their body to play the ball. Revised 6/14
The ball may be played off the net and ceiling, but not the curtains/dividers (these are out of play). A player may not attack the ball on the opponent’s side of the net. o If the ball is hit above the spiker’s side of the net and their hand crosses over the net without touching an opponent or the net, it is not a fault.
Illegal Contact Carrying or lifting: anytime the ball comes to rest in a player’s hands, it is considered an illegal hit. o Scooping, lifting, pushing or allowing the ball to roll on the body is considered carrying. Double Hit: When any one player makes contact with the ball two (2) consecutive times (excluding blocking exception). The opposing team is not allowed to attack or block on the serve. Play at the Net The net cannot be touched by any player while the ball is in play, whether accidentally or not. o If the ball hits the net with such force that it causes the net to hit the opponent, the ball is still in play. Contacting the opponent’s playing area with any part of the body except the feet is a fault. o Touching with a foot or feet is not a fault only if part of the same foot or feet remains on or above the centerline. o If it completely crosses the line, it is a fault. Player Conduct Players are expected to uphold a certain level of conduct for all Intramural activities. Each team will be judged and graded on their level of conduct for each contest. The expectations and grading system for conduct are outlined in the Intramural Rules and Regulations. Miscellaneous Each participant must present their ID and sign in prior to the start of each contest. Players arriving late must sign in upon arrival. All fans must remain out-of-bounds for the entire contest.
