Sitting along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan is Muskegon County. White Lake was already feeling the ecological toll of an era of heavy industrialization and widespread residential development, when it was placed on the list of the 43 Great Lakes Areas of Concern in 1987. Because of collaborative efforts to clean up the water and surrounding habitat, in October of 2014, White Lake was the first site in Michigan to be removed from the list of Great Lakes Areas of Concern.

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is working. It protects and revitalizes the world’s largest source of fresh surface water, and the region’s greatest economic and environmental resource. A Brookings Institution report shows that every $1 invested in Great Lakes restoration results in at least a $2 return in the form of increased fishing, tourism and home values.
