Through Gates of Splendor Operation Auca was the plan of five young men going to the Huaorani tribe of Ecuador in 1955. At their send-off, they sang that hymn: “We rest on Thee, our shield and our Defender. Thine is the battle, thine shall be the praise; When passing through the gates of pearly splendor, victors, we rest with Thee, through endless days.” The families sang with abandon, not knowing that the lives of these missionaries would be taken by the warriors of the very tribe they went to reach. Through Gates of Splendor retells the story, and captured my heart as a teenager. I realized then that mission has a price. My analysis of 42 years of mission involvement always brings me to the equipping mandate. The best contribution western missionaries can make today is in teaching, training and mentoring those in the majority world. God may be calling others to the same task as Jim Elliot and his four compatriots more than 55 years ago. To this end, we can also sing, “We rest on Thee, our shield and our Defender, ...[for] Victors, we rest with Thee, through [the] endless days.”

I Will Fly to the Nations For over 200 years western missionaries have circumnavigated the globe. Today, a large number of the countries that received missionaries have become the mission-senders. Its no longer ‘the west to the rest’ but ‘from everywhere to everywhere.’ Consider this:
70% 70% of the world’s Bible-believing Christians live outside the West
9.4%
48%
In 1910 Africa was 9.4% Christian; by 2010 it rose to 48%
These changing demographics form part of the new reality. More and more missionaries will come from this growing Church. Here is the testimony of a young believer in Siberia. Anatoliy was born into a large Siberian family. He attended an evangelical church but never gave his heart to the Lord until finishing college with an engineering degree. Being obedient to God’s call he moved to L’viv, Ukraine and planted a church and enrolled at L’viv Theological Seminary. The mantle is passed in a country that even 10 years ago was so closed to the Gospel.
40,000 Estimated number of people becoming Christians daily—half from China.
Brahim, a young man from Uganda shares a similar story. The passion to reach the unreached captured his heart. The first time he saw a huge aircraft taking off he exclaimed, “God has made my dream concrete. One day I will fly to the nations with the Gospel.” Brahim learned from a western missionary at MTC, Uganda, how to plant churches where she would never be able to go. By giving to the Timothy Fund students like Anatoliy and Brahim can complete their training and engage in missions to go where we can’t. Will you invest in Timothy Funds?

Educators from around the world: Trends
Over 5,200 Nigerian missionaries serve in 56 countries, often where western missionaries are not permitted. Non-western missionaries like these are going to the unreached. Over 2 billion people (1/3 of the world’s population) have never been presented with the gospel, and 86% of all Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists do not even know a Christian. How do we respond? The Global Survey on Theological Education states that, “theological education is ‘most important’ for the future of World Christianity and the mission of the church” (2013, 4). The PAOC is listening to this cry for trained leaders and responding through GlobalEd and its partner schools, national/global workers, and Timothy Fund Scholarships. This continues to be the PAOC’s strategic contribution.
A sharp, energetic group of students, educators and missiologists gathered at the Vancouver Global Summit in October. They came from South Africa, India, Uganda, Thailand and Canada. Together, they share a passion for theological training in majority world believers. Dr. Rainer Mittelstaedt and Dr. Michael Wilkinson were the keynote speakers. Rainer Mittelstaedt encouraged mentoring as an intentional complement to formal theological education and life-long learning. Rainer has designed a model for use in Sri Lanka that uses local forms of mentoring intrinsic to the culture. This is an area critical to the ongoing dialogue of theological education at home and abroad. Michael Wilkinson highlighted trends in Pentecostalism from his recent book, Global Pentecostal Movements (2012). Trends in Dr. Rajesh Duthie, India theological education include a demand for greater availability and increased assistance with scholarships, local theological publications, and financial sustainability. GlobalEd is currently working in these areas to strengthen theological education worldwide. Irving Whitt and Valerie Penney partnering together.
