Objectives:

Global health and future career plans

There is currently little research to assess the views and experiences of doctors working in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the United Kingdom, regarding their interest and experience in global maternal health and volunteering in low resource settings.

To date 50 trainees have completes the questionnaire, 15% were at SHO level, 58% registrar and 24% senior registrar across 11 different training regions. 91% said they had an interest in international women's health, and 32% had spent some time volunteering abroad. The majority perceived getting time out of the training programme and financial concerns as the main barrier. A large proportion wanted global health to form part of their future career. Trainees wanted more opportunities to get involved and were keen for the RCOG to help facilitate this. How significant were the following barriers

Methods The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) Trainees Global Health Group (TGHG) are conducting a national survey to assess the views of junior doctors training in obstetrics and gynaecology in the UK. An online platform is being used to send an electronic survey to all possible respondents by email.

Conclusions: There is a strong interest of O&G trainees in global health and the desire to incorporate this into their future careers. The TGHG are considering ways to help facilitate this interest.

A ten-point questionnaire was used, It captures: level of training, place of work, level of interest in volunteering and global health and previous experience, reasons for volunteering, barriers perceived and future career plans or desires.
