YOUR MONTHLY GUIDE TO THE SCHOOL NEWS, INFORMATION AND EVENTS AT SUNDANCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
A note from Mr. Hartwig...
I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. There are a lot of exciting things happening in our school this time of year. The fifth and sixth grade students sounded awesome during their Veteran’s Day program in November. The students are currently taking the winter MAP Assessment that will conclude on December 16th. We had the opportunity with community support to supply coats, hats, and gloves to more than 30 of our students last week. We will be sending the students outside for recess anytime the temperature, including wind-chill, is above 0 degrees. Please make sure that your child has a warm coat, boots, hat, and gloves. We currently use Power-School as our management data base system at SES. I would encourage you to log-in to your account to stay current with your child’s academic growth and achievement. This program will also allow you to communicate with your child’s teacher. If you have any questions on how to log-in to your account, please give Sarah or Amanda a call, and they would be happy to answer your questions. -Mr. Hartwig

In Ms. Courtney’s first grade classroom we were very busy this month writing our own book. We collaborated and wrote a story about a turkey named Tom who lived in Sundance. He wanted others to understand about being thankful and appreciate what they had, but during his adventure he discovered that he was actually very thankful too. We illustrated our book and have sent it off to the publishers. It will be a hard back cover book that we are very excited about keeping forever. Happy Thanksgiving everyone; we have much to be thankful for!! We are engineering our very own Mayflower ships in Mrs. Fremont's first grade class! Our materials are tin foil, Styrofoam cups, tape, and toothpicks. The students' goal is to construct a vessel that will hold as many Pilgrims as it can (pennies). We also do not want our vessels to capsize. The students are allowed different opportunities to float their vessel. In between each float, they are able to make changes in order for their vessel to be more buoyant. They are SO creative and smart!! Hello from the PE Mrs. Haas's 2nd grade class has been working hard this month! In reading workshop, our Department and Merry main focus has been learning how to navigate through non-fiction texts using text Christmas, features. In math, we have been working toward identifying and counting coins, as well as mastering place value within 1,000. We have been working on a family project in social The 2nd through 6th studies that involved researching our family's heritage, asking parents about family grade students just heirlooms, and collecting family pictures. All of this information is being creatively completed the Jump Rope for Heart program. displayed on cubes that will be shared with family during a celebration before Thanksgiving Our goal was $2,000 and we are excited to see break. how we did! We definitely got our heart rate up this week. Nurse Whitney will be coming in to give our students a presentation on the heart and how it works. We are blessed to have her as a resource! Coming up next, will be FITNESS! We will be experimenting with various fitness programs in the next few months to include crossfit, P90X, Insanity, Yoga, strength conditioning and many others. In other words your student will be working out for 30 minutes nd Mrs. Inghram’s 2 Grade~ Nonfiction…text features…research…family...writing informative twice a week in PE for several months which is great timing since they can’t spend as much time text…food groups…nouns…mental addition and subtraction with two-digits…place value to outside with the weather. 1,000…addition and subtraction timed tests…money…reading fluency…long vowel spelling I’m also challenging students this month for the patterns. These are many of the topics we have been studying throughout the month of “Month of Giving” It is a way for our students to think about others and give back to their November. We especially appreciate all of the family support in community. There are various challenges including helping us complete our family projects. We practiced our making Christmas cards for the nursing home, speaking and listening skills with our presentations to parents bringing food to school for the food pantry, and 5th graders. As we end the month, we have begun working on shovel someone’s driveway, etc. I’m putting another project with Mrs. Haas’ class. We can’t wait to share challenges on the board in the gym sporadically so if your child comes home with a new idea, this project, too! Happy Holidays from all of us to you! help them! Their names will be added to the “nice list” and given to Santa and Mr. Hartwig before Christmas vacation. :)
Thanks for all of your dedication and devotion on your child’s behalf. It certainly makes our jobs as teachers easier! Merry Christmas from Coach Williamson! Page 2
This time of year we start to see a lot of colds and sore throats. So, there is always the question, “Is my sore throat
from a cold or strep throat?”. Some of the differences between strep throat and a sore throat from a cold include:
Syptoms of Strep Throat: Sore throat that comes on rapidly Difficulty swallowing or painful swallowing
Symptoms of sore throat from a Cold: Sore throat that gets better after 1-2 days, or is worse in the morning and gets better as the day goes on Runny or stuffy nose
Loss of appetite
Cough
Headaches Fever, sometimes greater than 101˚F A raw, red appearance to the back of the throat
Watering eyes Low grade fever: under 101˚F Mild body aches
White pus on tonsils Tender, high lymph nodes in the neck Rash
Treatment: Treat a cold with rest, fluids, gargle with salt water, and any over the counter cold/fever reducing medication that is recommended by your doctor.
Absence of cough, stuffy nose, or other upper-repiratory symptoms
**Remember:
We cannot give any medication at school
Treatment: Strep throat needs to be treated with antibiotics
without a doctor’s note AND parent note.

In Mrs. Hansen’s Kindergarten, we have been doing some wonderful things in our classroom. We have been working really hard on rhyming. We have been working on rhyming whether that be real words or not real words/non-sense words. We try to create the rhyme or complete the rhyme. Mother Goose nursery rhymes are so good to help kids to learn to rhyme. We also wrote to the newspaper on "How to cook a Thanksgiving Turkey!" We took those 'recipes' and made a classroom book. We illustrated pictures to match our Thanksgiving recipes. We used the month of November to focus on turkeys. Our class really enjoyed making turkeys out of our hands, apples, paper, etc. We also created turkeys and made them into other things such as ninjas, princesses, rainbows, apple trees, etc. This was inspired by the book, "Turkey Trouble. We loved learning about turkeys and reading all the wonderful stories about them.
Mrs. Marchant's Kindergarten Class is preparing for Christmas! They are counting the days down by making a patterned chain. They are learning addition now and adding up all of their blessings! Ms. Jordan's class came over from the High school to help them write their letters to Santa Claus. The letters have been mailed to the North Pole and the children are anxiously awaiting his arrival. The Kindergarteners have been working hard on sounding out their words, rhyming, counting syllables and being good little boys and girls because they know Santa is watching! Page 3
In completing a counselor recommendation form for several seniors applying for scholarships, one of the questions was “Does your school require community service for graduation?” No, we don’t…we used to require 10 hours per high school year as part of the student’s social studies grade. The question prompted me to do a Google search of “service”. The following is from “Five Reasons to Serve Others” by Nipun Mehta, the founder of servicespace.org, in the February 10, 2012, issue of YES! Magazine. Mr. Mehta states, “When you serve, you discover that often the most important things you have to offer are not things at all.”
Students in Miss Needham’s fourth grade class have been working on writing skills. First, they comprised a paragraph about themselves, and then they published their paragraph by making miniature versions of themselves. Since this assignment, they have been working diligently on their district writing assessment. In both of these activities they are beginning to learn word processing and continue to hone their typing skills. In reading we are currently working on prefixes, suffixes and figurative language. The students have been working on the genre of mystery during their Thursday reading time and are enjoying reading National Geographic during our Intervention and Enrichment block. In math, we are continuing our Serve to discover abundance. Give of your time, your presence, your attention, your heart and your mind. Go beyond me to get to exploration of multiplication and division. In social “we”. studies, we have been learning about government, laws, Serve to express gratitude…pay it forward with a “heart of joy”. Mother Teresa said, “We can do no great things – only small things and taxes. Finally, in science the students are studying the skeletal system. They are learning their major with great love. Serve to transform yourself. When you give you actually receive. bones and their purpose. Students have also No true act of service however small can ever really be wasted. conducted several experiments to develop a better Serve to honor our inner connection. Each small act of service is an understanding of their skeleton. Pictured is a lab unending ripple that interacts with countless others. where students are trying to determine if solid bones Serve to align with a natural unfolding. It’s not what we do that counts but the inner motivation behind our action that really counts. or hollow bones would be stronger. Be the change you wish to see in the world. Change yourself and change the world inside out. We’re moved to help and cooperate and we’re wired to care. We’re blessed to have FFA, church youth groups, 4-H, Student Council, National Honor Society, etc. that have as part of their organization “service to others”. Encourage good works…it’s never too early or too late to start.
“PREPARING T ODAY FOR SUCCESS T OMORROW” We have been busy in Mrs. Ludemann's third grade, rocking through arrays and author's point of view. A Devil's Tower ranger visited our classroom the beginning of November and taught us all about the solar system. You might have noticed our pocket solar systems we brought home that day! Mrs. Ludemann received an exciting letter one day during lunch, inviting us to participate in the Great Mail Race. We wrote to 48 states and are anxiously awaiting responses. We even wrote to the Tennessee school Mrs. Ludemann attended in third grade! There is never a dull moment in our classroom! Page 4
The 6th grade wrote instructions to a demonstration on the three states of matter. After practicing the demonstrations ourselves we invited some 5th grade students to replicate the demonstration by choosing an instructional piece and following the steps. Both sets of 5th grade students completed the demonstration. Fifth grade according to Keaton M.: Fifth grade has been great so far. In Math we are learning how to multiply, divide and subtract decimals. We are also learning about lineplots and how to read them. Next in Language Arts we are learning to compare and contrast stories and their main ideas. We are also learning more about grammar. In Science we are learning about simple machines and we are experimenting with them. Finally in my favorite subject Social Studies, we are learning about the states. Fifth grade is fun and we are learning a lot.
Fifth grade according to Rylie M.: In Language Arts with Mr. Olson we have been learning about comparing and contrasting two stories. We are also working on summarizing. In Mr. Dobesh’s class we’re learning grammar. In Mr. Olson’s Math we are learning how to multiply and divide decimals (mostly dividing). In Mr. Dobesh’s we are just beginning to learn about line plots and how to use them. In Science, Mr. Olson just started teaching us about simple machines. Currently in reading we have three groups that are reading different books. Some are reading The Little Prince, some the Ghost Cadet, and some How to Eat Fried Worms.
5th & 6th Grade Veteran’s Day Program held on November 8th. We were all pleased with the first program held in our new gym.
In Ms. Love’s third grade class we started our unit on Wyoming Stewardship. The kids learned what stewardship is, and why they need to consider their impact on the future of Wyoming. Page 5

Raesha Sell, Crook County Natural Resource District, came in to work with the Grades 3-6 after school studies program. In afterschool program we have been working hard with engineering, building structures for different uses such as weight support, marble transportation, and race cars. When we are not training future engineers, we are busy cooking a variety of different foods. We have had a ton of guest speakers this month. Sara from 4H taught the students about the properties of flight and how to make a plane out of paper plates. We also had Raesha from Crook County Natural Resource District (CCNRD) Who taught the kids about how waste water from homes and businesses’ is processed and cleaned, and the importance of keeping our waterways free of pollutants. Lastly we had Deb Penning show the students how to paint/glaze pottery and the students had the opportunity to create their own art.
