A Psalm of Brokenness Psalm 51

When we think of brokenness we often think of things that have lost their usefulness. We may think of pain and imagine things like broken arms, broken promises, broken dreams, broken hearts or broken lives. We try to avoid being broken. Yet, David calls us to be broken before God and to offer our brokenness as a sacrifice to God: “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart O God, you will not despise.” (51:17) We learn several important things about brokenness from this Psalm. 1. The first thing we learn is to R_____________. (v.8)

2. The second thing we learn about brokenness is our need to R___________ (v.3-6)

3. We learn about the extent of our brokenness when we see what we must R______________ (1-2; 7-9) 1) Sin is like a C__________. 2) Sin is like a D________. 3) Sin is like a S_________. Is there any sin that cannot be forgiven and any sin that cannot be cleansed? (1 John 1:7) David said, “cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” (v.7) The purpose for our brokenness is not to keep us broken. 4. The great thing we learn about brokenness is that God can R_________ us. (10-12)

Useless Worship Mark 7:1-8

We learn from this passage several characteristics of useless worship: 1. Useless worship is h_____________________. Jesus said, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites.” 2. Useless worship is h______________. “They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.” Legalism is a killer of worship. 3. Useless worship is h__________________. “Jesus said, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” The key to true worship is not in the externals, but it is in the heart. From the 24th Psalm come at least four requirements for worshipers who want “ascend the hill of the lord? And who may stand in His holy place: 1) First, a person needs to have clean h________. 2) Secondly is the importance of having a pure h___________. 3) Thirdly, there must be only one God in our heart. “Who does not lift up his soul to a idol.” (Matt 6:24) 4) The fourth requirement if our worship is going to be acceptable to the Lord is that we speak the truth.
