A Summer of Sacred Stories Summer Sermon Series “Telling stories is not just a way of passing time. It is the way the wisdom gets passed along. The stuff that helps us to live a life worth remembering.” ~Rachel Naomi Remen

For thousands of years, the stories of the Bible were passed along in an oral tradition from one generation to the next. Imagine our ancestors talking in hushed tones deep into the night around the primordial fires of family and community. What did they say? They told stories. “In the beginning, God…” and “God called to Moses from a bush…” and “Once upon a time, there was a man named Job…” The word “Bible” comes from the Greek biblios meaning “little books.” The Bible is full of the stories of faith told to share something about God, humanity, creation, and the relationships between them all. This summer, we will explore the Bible in conjunction with children’s books to remind us how to share stories again. When we were young and we learned how to read, we did it in a group—first with our parents and then in class at the feet of our teachers. Only when we grew up did reading become a solitary pastime. But the thing is, the Bible is meant to be read together. Like our ancestors sharing stories around the fire. Then we can explore its depths and challenge each other’s assumptions and find God hidden in ways we never knew until someone helped us to see God peeking through the pages.
