ABB Turbocharging RR

Proven reliability over the years RR turbochargers combine high efficiency with small size.

These high-output turbochargers are mainly designed for use on high-speed diesel engines and on gas engines for an output range from about 500 kW up to 1800 kW per turbo charger. They are noteworthy for their high efficiency and small size. The RR turbochargers are equipped with pressurelubricated internal bearings and externally mounted “mixedflow” turbines and radial compressors. They are lubricated via the oil system of the engine using standard oil filters.

The high efficiency of these turbochargers results in lower engine fuel consumption. Owing to the wide range covered by the compressor characteristic and the high efficiency of the turbine, the thermodynamic behaviour of the RR is excellent. With their wide compressor characteristic for compressor pressure ratios up to 3.5 and their high efficiency, RR turbo chargers are ideal for diesel and gas engines developed for higher outputs and improved fuel consumption.

Benefits that add up Customers and end-users can rely on the world’s premier sales and service support network.

Major benefits Close contact with the diesel engine industry and a wealth of field experience enable ABB to provide expert advice on all questions connected with turbocharging. ABB application engineers are highly experienced specialists who can be called in to advise on solutions to any problems. Since ABB is a totally independent company, it can be consulted with confidence at an early stage. RR turbochargers are of extremely robust design, dimensioned to last the useful life of the engine and undemanding in operation. High reliability is achieved through a commitment to highest manufacturing quality and close tolerances. All spare parts can be used without re-machining. All RR turbochargers are provided with water connections at the compressor end, enabling them to be washed with water in service. As back-up in all operational questions, ABB has a special team of experienced engineers permanently on call. ABB’s worldwide service network ensures fast, efficient response around the clock.

Design features Casing dimensions

Normally, the turbochargers are mounted on the gas inlet or outlet flange of the turbine casing. As an alternative, they can be mounted on brackets, to which the bearing casing is bolted and which have to be supplied by the customer.

To ensure optimum mounting of the turbocharger on the engine, the air, bearing and gas casings are separate and can be turned relative to one another.
