Education and professional history Marcelle graduated with a BSc in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia, before going on to gain more than 10 years experience within leading advertising agencies in London and Amsterdam. She has an MBA from INSEAD and has held various director and board-level marketing positions with multinational companies, including American Express, Avis and Inter-Continental Hotels. She is also a director and trustee of New Philanthropy Capital. In 1996, Marcelle co-founded Holiday-Rentals.com, which became Europe’s leading website for advertising private holiday homes. The company was sold to HomeAway Inc in 2005.

In July 2014, she was awarded an honorary PhD from the University of East Anglia.
TV and media In October 2010, Marcelle appeared on Channel 4 Television’s The Secret Millionaire, when she went undercover in Plymouth, Devon. During the course of the programme, she gave away almost £100,000 to five local groups: Grow 4 Good South West (formerly Diggin’ It), Friends and Families of Special Children, Jeremiah’s Journey, Welcome Hall, and Horizons. All five groups are members of Localgiving.com and, between them, have raised over £65,000 through the platform.
