ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND What is Electrooculography?

Currently, there is a population of individuals in our society that are incapable of communication through conventional methods such as speech and hand gestures. One such disability is locked in syndrome. Locked in syndrome is a condition where an individual is completely paralyzed except for their eye movement. In order to aid in communication, our group proposes to create an electrooculography assisted device to utilize an individual’s control over their eye movement to communicate using a tailored interface.

Electrooculography (EOG) is a technique for measuring voltage potential changes across the eye. Human eye functions as a dipole, with the anterior pole acting as the positive pole while the posterior pole acts as the negative pole. This changes in this signal can be mapped to the direction the subject is looking in.

GOAL

METHOD

Create a low cost, easy to use device that will allow those with locked in syndrome (LIS) to communicate with efficiency and independence.

EOG Sampling Circuit

Signal Processing Unit GUI Application

One circuit for each directional plane (X,Y) samples, filters, and amplifies voltages.

Arduino Uno based signal processing interprets voltages and transmits cardinal directions

Our testing shows that the voltages swings can be reliably detected for each cardinal direction. By focusing on listening for predictable deltas in each of our signals rather than specific thresholds, we are less susceptible to user variability and EOG voltage drift.

Our testing shows that EOG could provide a reliable, low cost solution for those with LIS. While still not as fast as manually tying on a keyboard, our application allows much faster and independent communication than with traditional partner assisted scanning methods.
