COMMITMENTS FOR AICHI BIODIVERSITY TARGETS NUMBER 13 Lead Parties Party
Description of Action(s) and Commitment(s)
Development of proper conditions in order to conserve a representative sample of the national agrobiodiversity species under ex situ conditions, including genetic resources of animals, plants and microorganisms associated. Promotion of research and knowledge generation regarding centers of origin and diversification of species used for food and agriculture, of at least 5 species. Initiate the implementation of a national inventory of species for food and agriculture, along with their wild relatives, to be included in a national database that will allow strategic conservation planning.

FAO
DARWIN INITIATIVE
BIOVERSITY INTERNATIONAL
Description of support to be provided FAO supports countries in the implementation of the Global Plans of Action on animal, forest and plant genetic resources as contemplated in the FAO programme of work, its Strategic Framework and its rules. This includes the development of technical guidelines; capacity building, technical and policy support within projects; awareness raising, and monitoring. The databases DAD-IS and WIEWS are global repositories of national animal and plant genetic resources data and used for reporting on Aichi Target 13 and SDG Target 2.5. FAO maintains regional networks through which experiences can be exchanged. The project Safeguarding Mesoamerican crop wild relatives funded by the Darwin Initiative will support this coalition through the implementation of several Aichi Targets. The results of the project will be part of a publicity campaign to raise awareness of the importance of crop wild relatives and their conservation contributing to Aichi Target 1; we will assess the conservation status of at least 250 Mesoamerican crop wild relatives contributing towards Aichi Target 12; areas important for the persistence of crop wild relatives will be identified and management recommendations will be drafted for in situ conservation of crop wild relatives. In addition seed collections will take place in areas where gaps in genetic representation of CWR are identified and accessions will be generated for national seed banks, therefore helping achieve Aichi Target 13. Capacity building
