of the words Adam wrote are one syllable words with a couple of two- and three-syllable words. Adam falls in the early part of “within word pattern” stage because he misspells digraphs in the words chicken, cheers, board, reading. He also misspells the vowels in lion and calendar. During word study time, I will show Adam his CAFÉ Spelling Sheet and explain digraphs—one sound, two letters. I will have Adam create a consonant digraph page in his Personal Spelling Dictionary (p. 345). On this page I will have him correctly spell chicken. I will also have him add a vowel digraph page on which he will correctly write board, reading, and cheers. I will address only one concept during each word study session.
