The Auburn Plainsman, the student-produced campus newspaper of Auburn University, is published weekly on Thursdays and distributed throughout campus and the surrounding community. The paper’s online version is published at www.theplainsman.com. Our mission is twofold: (1) to provide news and information for the students, faculty/staff, and entire surrounding Auburn community, and (2) to provide training and experience for Auburn students in all aspects of journalism.

Position description: The Advertising Manager is responsible for leading a team of student account executives who generate revenue for the newspaper and website through the sale of print and online advertising. Essential duties: 1. Hire, train and supervise student account executives and design staff 2. Lead weekly sales team meetings and regular individual one-on-one meetings with account executives 3. Create and assign sales territories; prospect and assign advertising leads 4. Monitor all sales activities; track revenue; set sales goals; devise and lead incentive programs 5. Work with Creative Director to design and produce promotional materials, oversee ad design and creation 6. Work with Plainsman Office Manager to monitor payroll and commission structure, accounts receivable, credit applications, and collections 7. Work with Plainsman General Manager to set and meet budget goals, implement policies, manage advertising department 8. Create newspaper runsheets and dummy page layouts 9. Meet weekly with General Manager and Editor-in-Chief as one-third of the newspaper management team 10. Monitor relationships with advertisers; meet with advertisers, as needed 11. Represent the newspaper on occasion at professional organizations, Communications Board meetings, etc. 12. Other duties as assigned Skills, abilities and knowledge required to perform the work: 1. Must be highly organized, deadline-oriented, and able to multi-task 2. Must exhibit strong leadership traits and supervisory skills 3. Must possess knowledge of and belief in the power of advertising 4. Must possess excellent oral and written presentation skills 5. Must have knowledge of business operations and efficient office practices 6. Must be a currently-enrolled Auburn University student 7. Sales experience, especially media/advertising sales, highly desirable 8. Prior work experience at The Auburn Plainsman (or another campus newspaper) strongly preferred Reports to: General Manager Compensation: Combination of base pay plus commission February 2011

Student account executives are distracted by mid-term exams, approaching Spring Break, summer internship applications, etc. In addition, they’re discouraged by frequent rejections from advertisers and it shows in the newspaper – the same small ads are running every week with no new ads. What steps would you take to re-invigorate sales reps and increase ad revenue? 3) Assess the relationship between the print edition of The Plainsman and the Plainsman website.
