The following is a note sent to us from Thomas Bjorkman, Cornell University, in response to our recent suggestion that teff and BMR sorghum sudangrass are possible alternative crops that can be planted in June or early July.- Mike Hunter and Joe Lawrence “In addition to Teff and BMR sorghum sudangrass, there is the classic cash crop: buckwheat. The price this year is triple what it was a few years back, which is causing many growers to reconsider it. It is a good fit when a grower has corn land ready but unplanted in the second half of June. Buckwheat is particularly appropriate for those who need a cash crop rather than the forage that teff and sorghum sudangrass provide.” – Thomas Bjorkman, Cornell University

FARM

BUREAU NEWS

Issued Monthly by the Franklin County Farm Bureau Association Vol. II

,&8

Malone N.Y., September, 1916

B !O 8 O ,D!8 8 8/83,8

3X)3

The Farm Bureau will be represented in th same place on the fair grounds as heretofore, in the south end of the front approach to Vegetable Hall. The Cow Testing Association, co-operating as a feature of the Bureau, will be represented adjacent to the Bureau, in the main part of the hall. Some space will be devoted to the Franklin County Potato Association. At different times during the week the Manager will test samples of soil fo any who desire to bring them into the Bureau booth. As a matter guidance in selecting these samples, let them be representative of the fields. Take a good shaving of earth to a depth of nearly twice plow depth, taking on average about four such samples from an acre. Finally, mix these samples and bring in about a quart of the whole. If part of the

John Wheeler and Walter Peck, testers for the Malone and Triangular Cow Testing Associations, respectively, will give demonstrations on W edne sd a y and Thur sd a y afternoons at two o’clock at Vegetable Hall. Any who desire to have samples tested may bring them to the hall on either of these days. It is essential that care should be shown in taking samples. First, take the sample from the pail immediately after milking the cow, dipping into the pail for it. For a herd sample take the milk from the herd can just so soon as milking is finished. Keep such samples cool, so that they are not sour when the tester receives them. If this is adhered to, accurate tests may be obtained.
