A SIGNIFICANT OVERHAUL TO MEET SHIFTING PASSENGER FLOWS In 2012, the Allegheny County Airport Authority and Airmall USA finalized a plan to enhance the concessions program at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). In 2013, the Airmall at PIT launched the first phase of this construction project that resulted in the most significant overhaul of the concessions program and the airport since it opened in 1992. The project created a new retail corridor in the Airside Center Core at the top of the escalators where the FIDS displays were located. The renovations and additions were substantially completed in summer 2014.
RESPONDING TO AIRPORT CHANGES As Pittsburgh International Airport celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2012, Airmall knew that the concessions program must adjust to meet changing passenger traffic and consumer demands so that it can continue to serve as a trusted revenue source for the airport. When it began operations, Pittsburgh International Airport served a large number of passengers who had a layover, and the original concessions program took this into account. That meant establishing a retail core between Concourses A and B, where the majority of passengers were making their transfers. Today, Pittsburgh International has evolved into an origination and destination airport serviced by major domestic carriers rather than a hub for connecting passengers. Because of this change in passenger demographics and foot traffic, top-performing retail units were hidden from the majority of passengers. The newly created retail core puts top-line retailers front and center, exposing them to all passengers passing through the terminal.
A SHOPPING DESTINATION The new retail hub/corridor brings top-of-the-line retailers that passengers know and trust, along with unique luxury brands to the concessions program. The project was designed to make PIT a shopping destination for luxury fashion, beauty and accessories.
Airmall introduced a portfolio of global brands to the Airmall at PIT, including:
Airmall expects the enhanced concessions program will grow annual revenue by as much as 20 percent over current figures. Exposing more passengers to retail will drive sales and this will translate into additional revenue for the airport authority. The changes to the retail program have also enabled Pittsburgh to maintain its enviable status as the top-performing airport concessions program in the country with among the highest per-passenger spends in North America. By committing to these upgrades at PIT, the Airmall has extended its contract with the Allegheny County Airport Authority until 2029. The contract was initially scheduled to expire in 2017.
