Alumni Connections
June 2014 1WeConnections! SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY
Welcome to Alumni Connections! With great excitement we introduce the SWOSU Athletic Training Alumni connections! We are excited to reunite our former graduates and employees with our current staff and students. The Athletic Training Program at Southwestern has grown substantially in the past couple of years and we know that we have our graduates to thank! Our athletics department has also expanded to include not only the original Athletic Training Lab and the Zarrow Athletic Training Room in Rankin Williams Fieldhouse, but our satellite facility at the Sports Complex (baseball, softball, and soccer) and our newest addition, The Michael E Kiehn Athletic Training Facility inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. Currently, we have plans for a new main athletic training facility to be located in Rankin Williams Fieldhouse. Plans are also in the works for new educational

Get Connected We are in the process of making contact with all alumni and former employees in order to build our alumni database. The information that we are looking for includes: Name and Credentials, SWOSU Graduation Year(s) / Years Employed at SWOSU, Current Employment Information (Job Title, Employer and Location) and preferred email address.
Welcome our newest alum, the class of 2014 Page 2

[email protected] Jessica Cates (MEd., LAT, ATC) is a 2008 graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s athletic training program. She is currently living in Stillwater, Oklahoma with her two puppies, Paxton and Porter. She is currently employed by Oklahoma State University as the assistant athletic trainer in charge of women’s basketball. This was her first year working with the team. Her favorite part of the job is performing preventative programming. She also enjoys utilizing soft tissue techniques as part of the rehabilitation process. As a SWOSU student, Jessica fondly remembers the end of the year party at M.Catt’s house. She also enjoyed the “country kid atmosphere” of SWOSU. Jessica urges all athletic training students to take ownership of their education. “The world in general is not going spoon feed you and you are not entitled to anything. So don’t leave it to your teachers alone to give you what you need to succeed; CRACK A BOOK, get a study partner, spend some late nights in the library and work your butts off! Trust me, it is worth it.” After completing her undergraduate education, Jessica attended the University of Central Oklahoma where she earned her Master of Education in Health and Physical Education. Cates is a Young Professionals Committee Member for the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers’ Association. Thank you for your dedication to athletic training and for making SWOSU proud.

Organization of Student Athletic Trainers This student organization typically has 20+ active members. Our goals are to raise money to send students to state, district, and national symposiums to further their education and to network within the profession. The organization also prides itself in community service activities such as Relay for Life, town-wide clean up and providing water and medical care at local 5k races. This past year we have had members volunteer at the NCAA Wrestling National Championships and the Memorial Run to Remember in Oklahoma City. In addition to all of the educational and philanthropic work OSAT organizes several social events including the Thanksgiving and Christmas potlucks and an end of the year cookout. Officer elections for 2014-2015 were held in April and our new president is Ali Houchin, a junior from Newkirk, OK. Vice-President is Tiffany Hoffman, a senior from Broken Arrow, OK.
The position of Secretary is held by Reagan Bonnewell, a junior from Tuttle, OK. The last officer is Treasurer, Jessica Rauschenberg, senior from Tulsa, OK.

Letter from the Editor Thank you so much for taking the time to read this newsletter! As a 2012 graduate of the SWOSU athletic training program and now as an employee of the athletic training department, I am extremely proud of my connections with this university. I know that we have an excellent alumni base and that we have had some amazing former employees and educators. My goal is help forge connections amongst all of us “hasbeens” while introducing all of you to our current students. If I have learned anything in my young career as an athletic trainer it is that networking is the roots of our profession. I encourage all of you to visit us and get involved in the mentoring of our students and young graduates. If you have any suggestions of ways to improve the newsletter or if you would like to submit an article or information, please send it to
[email protected]. Thanks again for reading and I look forward to seeing you at our reunion in October!
