The CVA will assist in leading volunteer groups at habitat restoration events, develop informational materials that the describe the desired outcomes of habitat restoration events, coordinate related social media platforms to raise awareness and promote volunteerism, work with MPC staff to further manage and refine the gravel-bed nursery program that generates trees for reforestation activities, and assist with large scale public events such as National Public Lands day. • Prairie Seed Nursery program: The Mississippi NRRA and the MPC have been coordinating with four local elementary schools to grow prairie plants from seed. The CVA would coordinate with the schools to continue the program, help provide educational materials, identify sites for the schools to collect seeds, assist in seed planting and finally assist in locating suitable sites for planting and lead groups in proper planting techniques. • Seed Pod program: Seed pods (i.e. small balls of soil containing prairie seed) are created from wet soil with prairie seed added. The CVA would assist in coordinating activities at each school site, helping develop classroom materials, explain the importance and benefits of prairie restorations and assist in finding locations for the school groups to disperse the seed pods in the early spring. This program is closely tied to the Every Kid in a Park program and works generally with 3rd and 4th graders. • Social Media and Website: Reaching out to visitors and the general public regarding the outcomes of planned activities and management actions is necessary to sustain interest in and support of NPS management actions. The CVA would assist in preparing materials for social media outlets (e.g. FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) as well as the Mississippi NRRA website. The emphasis would be on the natural resource management actions the Mississippi NRRA has taken or will be. • Citizen Science program: Collecting and organizing natural resource data is important for determining populations, trends and determining the success of landscape restorations. The CVA would assist the Mississippi NRRA biologists, field staff and volunteer coordinator to further expand the use of volunteers to collect data on plant and animal populations in the park.
