An Easy Way to Trapunto

An Easy Way to Trapunto If you want to add depth to a particular part of your quilt design, you can trapunto that area by adding an additional layer of low-loft poly batting. This is a fast and easy way to add the dimension without having to cut the back of your quilt and 'stuffing' with batting. In this case, I am going to add additional batting to a turtle shell so the little shell is puffy from the front side after quilting. Step 1 On the wrong side of the quilt, cover the design with a piece of low-loft batting.

Step 2 Place a piece of thin muslin over the batting and pin in place.

Step 3 Go back to the front side of the quilt and repin the batting/muslin in place; remove the rear side pins so you don't accidently jam them into your feeddogs.

Step 4 Using your machine and a straight stitch, outline the part you want to be puffy…in this case, I'm outlining only the shell.

Step 5 Once you have outlined the design, go back to the backside of the quilt. CAREFULLY cut away all the excess batting and muslin that are outside the stitching line. Note: I like to use those wonderful duckbill embroidery scissors to remove the excess fabric.

Step 6 That is it! When I do my final quilting, I outline the shell so it really stands up for dimension and interest.
