Fast, fun, fusible and Oh so Beautiful. Choose from Six animal favorites. Learn the steps of layered applique, shading and dimension created with value and contrast. Kathy will demonstrate her fabric paint crayons to add lovely hints of shading. We will finish with a discussion of how to quilt the pictorial quilt. Supplies for students to bring for all patterns. Pressing sheet for fused applique. • Large ziplock bag. • 2 yards of Lite Steam a Seam 2. • 4 inch or small size, sharp pointed scissors for cutting small complex shapes. • 1 clear plastic vinyl or clear laminate sheet the sized of your pattern. Art tracing paper can be used too. ( Tape together if you need to for size). • Sharpie fine point black marker. Ironing surface and travel iron if you have one. FABRICS REQUIRED Koala 13 x 17 without border Background Fabric- 12.5 x 18 inch medium blue or other background fabric. Tree 2 x 19 inch reddish tree bark fabric. White, 5 x 9scrap Leaves 6 x 4 bright medium green Medium brownish grey print. 12 x 16 Dark brown grey print. 9 x 8 Light yellow brown print. 8 x 8 Black 4 x 4

Pelican. 24.5 x 31.5 without border Background fabric - 25 x 32 . To assemble the sky and water sections; sew sky fabric 25 x 7 to the water fabric section. 25 x 25. Option- To create the illusion of distance over a section of water, use three water fabrics. Vary the value from lightest at the horizon line to darkest on the bottom edge. (Flipping one of those fabrics to the back side may lighten it enough to use for the most distant water area) Sew together to create 25 x 25 section of water. Pelican -Lighter feathers on body- Four 8 x 8 inch scraps of tone on tone beige prints. Use small scale prints or batiks that suggest feathers. Darker shoulder area. 6 x 9 inch brownish/ gray. Black Face- 4 x 6 1/2 inches Beak and light golden brown part of the head. 1/4 yd. White neck- 6 x 9 light gray or white.

Distant Islands- 1/4 yd muted light blueish green with no real foliage details. Foreground bush and smaller bush on right- 1/4 yd of medium green with some suggestion of foliage. 8 x 8 inch scrap of darker green foliage type print. See above photo. Large Roots, 1/4 yd of gray or brown Sea Turtle 21 x 32 without borders Background water batik. 32 x 21 (lighter turtles show up better on dark background) Top shell-1/4 yard of light -1/3 yard of darker print for shell plates. You need an interesting small to medium scale print to contrast with the lighter base fabric. Flippers, feet and head. -1/2 yard of light batik with very little print. On top of that you will place mosaic shapes in contrasting color. 1/3 yd for mosaic shapes. Bottom shell plates- Use a different medium print, than your mosaic print. 1/4 yard 1/4 yd medium to dark violet or green, for shell rim and darker face mosaic shapes. Optional-coral reef fabrics with 3-6 inch for fussy cut images. 2 different sand fabrics- 1/4 yards Heron: 22 x 26.5 without borders Background fabric. 23 x 27 inch sky section straight pieced to 23 x 4 inch water section. Sky may be all one piece of fabric or Optional 2 inch squares or diamonds on point. Background sky and water sewn together before class. 4-5 1/4 yd, small scale prints for feather fabrics. Include lights,and mediums, darks. 1/3 yard for body shape. This is the darkest and bottom layer of the body feathers. 1/2 yd of white and black. Do not use sheer whites, they will shadow through. 3 x 8 shaded white for inner neck shape. Bills and feet- gold /browns or color used in your feathers. 4 X 12 inch “Black light weight ultra-suede” is an option for complex piece under eye. It doesn’t need a finished edge! Optional: White fluffy yarn for embellishment along with appropriate couching needle

OTTER FRIENDS 7 X 21 Sky fabric sewn to 17 x 21 inches of water fabric. Optional consider two water fabrics one darker towards to horizon line to create extra depth. (They should blend together with gradual change) Otters- 1/4 yd each of 4 different fabrics. Light medium grays in small prints of batiks for heads. 1/4 yd each of 3 different darker grays for bodies. 6 x 6 in ch black for nose and eyes. 3 x 4 inch brown for eyes. 2 inch square light pink for tongue Island and Rocks. 1/4 yd of 4 different prints from light to medium in brown or red browns. Avoid grays. Island Trees 3-4 inch trees that you can fussy cut from a print.

Mother and Baby Panda.

Back ground 26 x 28 inch sky piece sewn to 26 x 9 inch meadow or grass piece. Sew together. White- 2/3yd . (Avoid sheer) 1/4 yd of creme white, or slightly darker in value than white white. Black- 1/2 yd solid. 1/2 yd of Dark blackish blue batik or small scale print. Grey- 6 x 8 inch square of medium grey Brown - 4 x 4 square of brown for eyes. Pink 2 x 4 pink scrap for tongue. Green- Two different, one lighter in value for fern1/4 yds. Flowers- 1/4 yd of 2.5- 3 inch size flowers. You will fussy cut flowers and leaves from this. Optional- Novelty small butterfly print for one to 3 butterflies.
