The audience clapped, laughed and screamed at the astonishing acts performed by the Cirque Chinois. The performance included a twenty minute intermission and lasted for two hours with ongoing tricks and stunts. Direct from Beijing, the National Circus of the People’s Republic of China, performing "Cirque Chinois," was founded in 1953, making it one of the longest running and most distinguished circus troupes in China. Free to the public, the company performed acts such as the Great Teeterboard, Grand Flying Trapeze, Group Contortion, Straw Hats Juggling, Girls’ Balance with Bowls and many other acts. The performance began by an introduction led by Steve Thomas, president of Midland College, who thanked those who contributed to the series making it possible to allow this performance at MC. “The Friends of the Series are individuals in the community who also want to be a part of enabling this community to really experience such wonderful performers that we are able to offer,” Thomas said. The Midland College Foundation created the Friends of the Series for those who wish to contribute the Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series and the Phyllis and Bob Cowan Performing Art Series endowments. “If you are interested of being a Friend of the Series, we certainly invite you to become one because the contributions and their support are very important for us to bring the caliber performance that we bring every year,” Thomas said.

An annual gift of $1,000 or more, per calendar year, from ‘Friends’ allows the foundation to sustain the outstanding programs of great lectures and fine entertainment, according to the program. “We would also like to thank Lynch, Chappell & Alsup PC, the law firm who sponsored our reception tonight for our distinguished donors and Friends of the Series,” Thomas said. Friends of the Series are provided special seating at all events as well as reserved parking and invitations to exclusive receptions. “We have been doing this for 14 years, and it’s kind of hard to think about that, but two performances a year for 14 years because of the Friends of the Series and Phyllis and Bob Cowan Series, so thank you; we appreciate you,” Thomas said. Thomas also thanked the Midland Reporter- Telegram, who has provided free advertising for the community to become aware of the different kinds of entertainers coming to Midland. Many of the artists in the troupe have won international awards including Li Liping, the first Golden Clown winner from China at the renowned Monte Carlo International Circus Festival and Xia Juhua, the “Chinese Ulanowa” of the Circus World and Chairwoman of the International Chinese Circus Society since the early 1980s. The company has won more than 20 gold and silver medals and various other awards at international circus festivals including the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival, Cirque de Demain, Wuqiao International Circus Festival, Wuhan International Circus Festival and China National Acrobatic Competition, according to the program.

During the 1980s, the company started to change the concept of the animal-circus to a new style of non-animal circus which influenced the then pioneers of Cirque du Soleil who invited many coaches from the company to teach them the acts such as balancing chairs, bicycle and Chinese poles. The company has toured to 80 countries around the world. Some of the countries that the Company has toured include Canada, United States, France, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. The company’s flying trapeze troupe was invited to perform with the United States Ringling and Barnum & Bailey Bros. Circus. Throughout this fall, the company will perform their new program "Cirque Chinois” in the United States and Canada. The Midland performance is part of their coast to coast tour of the United States and Canada.
