Highlights of 2012
January started with the departure of board member Terry Burhans who relocated to West Virginia. The board decided to hold the 2012 Oscars® viewing party at Khan’s Cave, and we banked over $3,100 in profits from the 2011 Fun Run event. Preliminary work on the bandstand began with an early draft of the City’s “Right of Entry” (ROE) permit form.
T-CERT, TVSD, TJWC and others. Just over 400 runners participated in the event. Josh Goldsmith resigned his seat on the board. Work on the Bandstand was held up due to delays in getting the city’s final LOE approval.
February was marked by the firstever retirement of a founding board member, as Roy Colosimo bid his farewell after a full 4-year term. TF held its corporate annual meeting: five members were reappointed to new 4-year terms and all four officers were reappointed to new 2year terms. TF hosted the 3rd annual Tierrasanta at the Movie Awards event at Khan’s Cave with 59 paid attendees. Key Bandstand decisions were made as the board selected the three contractors for three different parts of the project.
In July TF basked in its success in pulling off a great and profitable Fun Run event. The City signed the ROE permit, and actual Bandstand construction finally started on July 16th. In August the board appointed new board member Kate Greathouse. Bandstand construction was proceeding slowly.
In March TF banked over $1,100 in profits from Calendar 2012. The board heard a proposal to run a Farmers Market at Serra High. Bandstand work continued: refining the ROE and negotiating with the chosen contractors.
In September the board appointed new board member Lisa Leonard. Bandstand work was proceeding much more expensively and much more slowly than planned.
In April the board banked over $1,000 in profits from the 2012 Oscars® viewing party. The Bandstand’s ongoing engineering work identified some underground wiring to be avoided. The board learned that TCIC will close to make way for an Ace Hardware store. Director Goldsmith held another 2-day Cancer “Walk for Life” event at Villa Norte Park.
In October the board appointed new board member Khoa Hoang. The photo competition winners were revealed at Oktoberfest. Susan Deininger presented a plan to convert the “Hex” building into a community center and sought TF as a project sponsor.
By May the Fun Run sponsors had grown to three businesses, with another six ready to sign up. Many members participated in various Patriots Day events. Bandstand work focused on arranging insurance certificates for the three contractors, and paver sales passed 60.
November was the last meeting of the year. Bandstand construction finally was completed but cost overruns were about $12,000. Some 60 new pavers were printed onsite as landscaping was being finished. Lee Campbell got an early start on planning Taste 2013, and TVSD hosted a Holiday Opulence event.
In June the board completed final preparations for and hosted the 2nd Tierrasanta Fun Run with excellent assistance from Kiwanis,
Some board members participated in a multiorganizational Christmas party in December.

Tierrasanta Fun Run 2012
On June 30th the Foundation conducted its second annual Tierrasanta Fun Run. Over 400 paid runners & walkers, and many more participants (volunteer workers, vendors, sponsors and lookers on), took part in a profitable fundraiser. Fun Run event chair Tina Schaffer, ably supported by volunteer and future board member Lisa Leonard, organized a route (just under 5 km) up and down Clairemont Mesa Blvd with a loop into De Portola middle school. Sean Blue (bib 427, age 26) was overall winner with a blistering time of 16:28. Second overall was Nathan Longfellow (bib 204, age 14), of Cookeville, Tennessee, with a time of 17:04. Third overall was Zachary Lewis (bib 439, age 53) with a time of 17:54. Fourth overall was Arne Knudsen (bib 189, age 25) with a time of 17:47. Top female finisher was Lyndsey Love-Blue (bib 210), wife of Sean Blue, with a time of 20:32. Top finisher pushing a baby stroller was Evan Day (bib 20, age 31) with a time of 21:31. Top finisher with a dog was Burt Lonergan (bib 202, age 37) with a time of 25:25. Top female finisher age 50 or over was TF’s own Lisa Leonard (bib 2) with a time of 23:42. Top finisher age 60 or over was Bill Reschke (bib 445) with a time of 22:16. The organizers generated over $12,000 in profits for the Foundation. Key in this was the sponsorships generated by volunteer and future board member Kate Greathouse including: $5,000 from the Firefighters Union, $1,000 from SDG&E, $500 from Roadrunner Sports, $500 from Khol’s stores, and $250 each from Full of Life Chiropractic, Solare Energy, Z-Ultimate Self Defense, Center for Pain Relief, Tierrasanta FireSafe Council, The New Well, Cooking4Life, All Service Property Management, Invisible Fence Brand and Makeover Max. In-kind contributions from: Coldwell Banker, UPS Store, Marquis Pilates. Beer was donated by Karl Strauss and Stone Brewery.

Long-Range Planning for the Future: Years ago, in 2009, Tierrasanta Foundation established the Tierrasanta Infrastructure Fund (TIF) to serve as a primary funding source for infrastructure improvement projects sponsored by TF. The first such major project organized by TF was the Tierrasanta Community Bandstand project. This project was financially managed separately from TIF, but as Bandstand expenses grew then TIF funds were used to cover these expenses. In the end, TIF was spent to zero in order to cover costs associated with the Bandstand project. Tierrasanta Foundation’s total bank balance includes both funds to be used at TF’s discretion and also funds held on behalf of other organizations. The several ledger accounts on TF books include: 1) the Tierrasanta FireSafe Council (T-FSC), 2) the Tierrasanta Community Emergency Response Team (T-CERT), 3) a Community Plans & Events (CPE) ledger (for Concerts in the Park), 4) a “TSC Gifts” account (unencumbered cash donations to TF from TSC members), 5) the 2013 Calendar account, and 6) the Corporate account that is the TF’s general ledger of all other unrestricted funds.
Tierrasanta Community Bandstand Costs to construct the bandstand ran well over the original estimates. The final price tag of about $34,340 was nearly $12,000 above the combined estimates. TF was able to cover this significant overrun by spending its own corporate resources (which primarily included proceeds from Fun Run 2011 and Taste 2010). Despite the difficulties in getting this project started, and then later getting it finished, today the bandstand is a crown jewel of public infrastructure that was created entirely without the use of any public (i.e., tax) money. Thanks go out to the generous Tierrasantans, many of whom are memorialized on the stage itself, to the TF board members and volunteers who helped conduct the events that produced the needed cash, and in particular to the TF’s own Lee Campbell who designed and engineered the project, got it approved by the city, oversaw the construction, negotiated all the finishing details, and ultimately got the project completed, inspected, approved and signed off.
The TF has raised money over four years, and in 2012 we actually spent some of (most all of) that money to build the new Bandstand, which will serve as a stage for concerts and other public events for decades to come. The surface of the bandstand includes nearly 600 12-in by 12-in concrete pavers, and to date about 1/3 have been sold to the public. This sale of pavers was intended as the primary source of funds to pay for the overall project.
