National Youth Dance Wales NYDW provides first-class training and performance opportunities for some of Wales’ most-talented and committed young dancers. It harnesses the energy and excitement of young peoples’ enthusiasm for dance and dancing, and channels it into a creative, contemporary force that celebrates the very best of Youth Dance in Wales today. NYDW invests in the development of Wales' most promising young dancers by focusing on core dance-skills, strength and performance techniques. In 2017, NYAW is broadening its successful Step Up programme in order to engage with more young dancers, and to enhance their training and development throughout the year and in advance of auditions for NYDW 2018. Who is it for? Step Up is for young dancers in Wales (aged 14 – 20 years) who regularly engage in dance classes through their school/college, private dance school and/or with their local youth dance company, and who demonstrate a strong desire to 'step up' to another level of challenge and experience. Entry onto the Step Up programme is via an Audition process. What is involved? Step Up offers an exceptional training opportunity over three short residencies wherein participants will develop a better understanding and practice of dance technique, choreographic principles and performance. Who will you be working with? Renowned dance artist, Kerry Nicholls, continues to lead the NYDW Step Up programme. Kerry teaches, choreographs and mentors extensively worldwide; she is widely regarded as one of Britain’s leading contemporary dance teachers.

What if you can’t afford it? We are keen to ensure that no-one is deterred from applying for NYDW for financial reasons. All applications for financial assistance will be treated in strictest confidence. Auditions Regional auditions for Step Up 2017 will be held during April. Applicants must be aged between 14 – 20 years on 31st August 2017 and must be able to demonstrate active involvement with dance at an advanced/ intermediate level. What should you expect at the Audition? The half-day audition will include a contemporary technique class, learning repertoire and a short creative exercise. How much does it cost to audition? Kerry works with some of UK’s foremost, professional companies (including Company Wayne McGregor, DV8 Physical Theatre and Michael Clark companies), and with the leading vocational schools across the country. She is also annual guest lecturer at The Juilliard School in New York, USA. She has directed diverse projects and received numerous International choreographic commissions. How much does it cost? It costs £310 covering all tuition, accommodation, insurances, two meals a day and a contribution to a social/welfare fund.
