Congratulations to Marcos Deaquino who received the Hangee Tuition Scholarship & the Thaman Textbook Scholarship and will graduate in December with his Associates Degree from Lee College. WWJH is utilizing technology to “pipe in” live teaching to their ISS classes and also at the DAEP. Kudos to the technology department, Ms. Lott, Ms. Davenport, the math department and Ms. Gilmore. Boys Baseball team is 10 and 3 in district and are looking at the playoffs next week. Way to go guys! The Ladies Softball team also 10 and 3 with Friday night being their last home game (and Senior night) before playoffs. Way to go ladies! Nottingham held their STAAR Pep Rally w/ Texans TORO. The kids were very excited and say they are ready for their tests. KMB held Super Saturday last weekend with a great attendance of 80 students and 10 very wonderful dedicated staff members. Thank you KMB staff and Ms. Strolberg for being so committed to our children. SFA continues to challenge their students academically and it is paying off. DRA progress assessment shows 88% of all Kinder students are "on or above" grade level in their reading! Now that is something to be proud of! Congratulations to Ms. Caroline Duda who was elected to become TAGT Leadership 2015-16 Secretary for the Gifted Plus Division. We are proud of you. DISD raised $1235 for Bridgehaven. Thank you DISD! Dr. Jessica Johnson was the Keynote Speaker at the Texas Women Council of School Executors in Houston on April 9. She was appreciative of the eight lady administrators who traveled to the dinner/banquet to support her. The FFA Career Development events were announced and many of our teams are going to state! Way to go! Ms. Gatlin highlighted one of our DHS students (Alexander Messer ) who was surprised by his military brother at lunch. Sweepstakes! For the first time since the 1990’s, DHS Choir brought home the Sweepstakes trophy. The Concert and Treble Choirs attended UIL Concert and Sight-Reading at Lee College in Baytown and they came home with the sweepstakes trophy! We are so proud of the DISD Choir Program, the choir members and of course Ms. Smesny! Success! DHS and the DHS Food Service folks partnered together to host their first Student/Parent Breakfast. Thank you Ms. English for organizing this event. It was well attended and a great time was had by all. Mr. Heckaman went to KMB and visited with all 5th graders to educate them on various instruments and recruited students for the 6th grade band. Career & Tech News – Service Employment Redevelopment / Jobs for Progress in Partnership with Workforce Solutions. There are 15 paid summer jobs for 2015 graduating seniors in DISD by SER- Jobs for Progress. DISD Board of Trustees honored a previous student who met all requirement and received her diploma. It was a great celebration. We had one communications from the public from Ms. Carrie Kelley. She talked about Chartwells to the Board. She gave some compliments of some good things that are going on in the Child Nutrition Department. Ms. Kelley also expressed some concerns about Chartwells.
ITEMS FOR BOARD ACTION: Approved the Consent Agenda which included the minutes, disbursements and budget amendments. Approved Instructional Materials Allotment (IMA) and TEKS Certification 2015-2016 Form. This is a TEA requirement for all Local Boards to certify that the district has instructional materials that cover the elements of the essential knowledge and skills of the required curriculum. Approved Chartwells Contract Renewal for the 2015-2016 school year. Dr. Johnson asked the Board to table the replacing of wiring on the Cattle Barn at the Dayton FFA Arena until next month. The Board agreed. Approved the new course selection at DHS for the 2015-2016 school year. Mrs. Fontenot discussed the new courses that will be offered which include: Dual Credit Art Appreciation, Dual Credit Psychology, Dual Credit Sociology, Boys’ Soccer, Girls’ Soccer, Computer Technician (RITS renamed), Culinary Arts, ROTC 2, Pre-AP World History. Approved the Statement of Impact for several Charter Schools in Houston. This is a TEA requirement for school district to state the charter will have a major impact on districts’ enrollment. Approved the Certification of Unopposed Candidates for the May 9, 2015 Election. This is a new process as per the State. The Board must meet, accept and issue an order declaring the election cancelled and the unopposed candidates elected. Positions #5 (Ms. Harris), #6 (Mr. Williams) and #7 (Mr. Smesny) are unopposed for the May Election. Approved the Order of Cancellation and declaring the unopposed candidates elected. As per the state, the candidates have to wait until after the official election date and the prescribed canvassing period to be sworn in and assume their duties. Superintendent's Report Tri-County Services – Dr. Johnson introduced Ms. Sheree Buckman who represents Tri-County Services who made a presentation to all of the principals and counselors over what services they can offer our district. Some of the services include: 1. Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Program 2. Kid’s Connection & Youth Connection Curricula 3. Prevention Services for Schools – Elementary, Middle School and High School 4. Prevention Services for School Staff 5. Prevention Services for Parents and Families 6. Prevention Serviced for the Community
Liberty County Tax Assessor- Dr. Johnson introduced Mr. Richard Brown who had asked to come and speak to the Board concerning a future proposal.
SAT Update- Dr. Johnson turned this report over to Mr. Young. Mr. Young went on to present to the Board that SAT testing is being redesigned and will begin in the spring of 2016.
T-TESS and T-PESS Update- Dr. Johnson reported over the new teacher and principal evaluation system that will be taking the place of PDAS. This new system will be significantly different than the current system. Dr. Johnson also discussed the various ways that the district administrators, the campus administrators and C&I Office has been moving towards the new system with implementing Best Practices with fidelity such as RtI, Collaborative Lesson Planning, Data-Driven Instruction, PLCs, Differentiated Instruction and highly engaged classrooms.
Bond Update- Dr. Johnson showed the similar graphic picture of the proposed Rodeo Covered Arena (two will be displayed at DHS and one at Administration) CAC Update Letters were sent out, Ground-breaking plans for the two new elementary schools are underway (May 28), along with various Bond Updates continue with all facilities/departments and news media.
Assistant Superintendent Pierce's Report Financial/Budget Statements were discussed.
Check Register from the Activity Funds were shown to the Board. Tax Collector’s Report was given and Ms. Pierce stated we were a little above collections from this time last year. Budget Update – Mrs. Pierce started by saying that there are 42 days remaining in the Legislative Session. The Legislative Session is a moving target and no one can predict how this year’s session will turn out. Mrs. Pierce went on to update the Board on a few of the hot topics in the Legislative Session. Assistant Superintendent Painter’s Report SB 149 and Graduation Update was given to the Board. EXECUTIVE SESSION *(Items discussed may become action items in open session.)
