INSTALLING THE UNIVERSAL BRACKET I N N E W W O O D / M E TA L S T U D CONSTRUCTION 1. Determine the location for the speaker. 2. If the installation includes a Sonance Acoustic Enclosure, install it according to its installation instructions before installing the Universal Bracket. 3. Using a straight edge, check for flatness of the studs/joists in the two different axes. • To measure the studs/joists lengthwise, place the straight edge on the face of one stud/ joist where the Universal Bracket will be attached and verify that it is flat for at least 32” (81cm). Repeat for the other stud/joist. To obtain flat mounting surfaces on the studs/joists, place furring strips as required or replace the stud/joist. (See Figure 1.)

FINISHING THE UNIVERSAL BRACKET (DRYWALL CONSTRUCTION) The Finishing and Painting procedures described here will in almost all instances be performed by professional drywall and paint contractor personnel. They are included here as a reference for you.
F I G U R E 29 NOTE: The Mud Dam can be pulled out a maximum of 1½” (38mm) FROM THE SURFACE OF THE BRACKET. The thickness of the Bracket itself is 1/16” (2mm) 17. When the desired height is reached, use a screwdriver to push the four Locking Tabs to their IN positions, as shown in Figure 29, right. You can pull the tabs out and re-set them if necessary.
The Architectural Series speaker installation procedure begins on page 13. 1. Apply joint tape over all of the gaps around the Bracket. Apply a layer of joint compound over the tape. (See Figure 31.)
18. Seal the gap between the Bracket and the drywall opening with an all-purpose construction adhesive, such as Power Grab, as shown in Figure 30 left, next column. Smooth the adhesive with a putty knife (or your fingers) so it is level with (or slightly below) the surface of the drywall. See Figure 30 right. 19. Replace the Paint Shield on the Bracket (no screws are necessary). 20. The Universal Bracket is now ready for finishing.

2. Once the joint compound over the tape is dry, apply a thin layer of joint compound to the entire surface of the Bracket and the drywall surrounding the Bracket. Do not exceed the height of the Mud Dam with plaster, joint compound or any other finishing materials. Feather the finishing material out away from the bracket. See Figure 32. Let the material dry to get a solid surface.
4. When the wall surface finish has been completed, the speaker installer must inspect each speaker installation. Check for uniformity, straightness and lack of seam lines. See Figure 33.
F I G U R E 33 NOTE: We recommend wearing vinyl or latex gloves to perform the inspection. At the very least you must have clean hands.
F I G U R E 32
5
Repeat this process as necessary to achieve the desired finish. 3. If sanding, sand the surface until it is level with the Mud Dam, taking care not to damage the edge of the Mud Dam. NOTE: Be careful when sanding not to round off the the sharp edge created between the finished surface and the inside wall of the mud dam.

3. Apply a large drop of thread locking compound (provided with the speaker) to the end of each hex speaker attachment screw (provided with the speaker). NOTE: The thread locking compound will prevent the hex screws from backing-out during normal use, but will allow the speaker to be removed if it ever requires service. 4. Place the loudspeaker into the Bracket and attach it using the provided hex screws and the provided hand-held hex wrench. See Figure 36.
F I G U R E 34 Once the Universal Bracket is installed and finished, the only visible portion of the Bracket is the edge and interior surface the Mud Dam.
I N S TA L L I N G T H E A R C H I T E C T U R A L SERIES SPEAKER 1. If the Paint Shield remains on the bracket, remove and discard it. 2. Pull the speaker wire out through the bracket opening and connect it to the loudspeaker terminals (see Figure 35). Be sure to connect amplifier “+” to speaker “+” and amplifier “–” to speaker “–”.
F I G U R E 36 VERY IMPORTANT: • USE ONLY THE SUPPLIED HAND-HELD HEX WRENCH TO ATTACH THE SPEAKER . • DO NOT USE AN ELECTRIC DRILL OR SCREWDRIVER. • NEVER OVER-TIGHTEN THE HEX SPEAKER ATTACHMENT SCREWS . Over-tightening the hex screws can fracture the bracket assembly (which has been permanently installed into the wall or ceiling). This type of damage is NOT covered by the Sonance Architectural Series Warranty.

I N S TA L L I N G T H E A R C H I T E C T U R A L SERIES FINISH COMPONENT
Leave Top 1/16” (2mm) Exposed
PAINTING THE FINISH COMPONENT You can paint micro-perforated metal and cloth Architectural Series Finish Components before installing them. Use ONLY water-based latex paint on the Finish Component. NOTE: These painting instructions are based on the use of premium-quality paints such as SherwinWilliams ® and Behr ® brands. Other paint brands may have different amounts of pigment, which may require different dilution proportions than are given in these instructions. We recommend that you perform a test before making the final application to the Finish Component. 1. For metal Finish Components only: Before painting the Finish Component, carefully remove the scrim cloth from the underside of the Component. It is held in place with a light tacking glue. Remove the cloth carefully, since you will need to replace it when you’re done painting the Finish Component. NOTE: Remove any adhesive residue from the back of the Finish Component before painting. 2. Use a painter’s tape designed for delicate surfaces (such as 3M Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape For Delicate Surfaces, #2080) to mask the inside and outside surfaces of the Finish Component’s rim. • For Finish Components with micro-trim: Mask the inside and outside surfaces of the entire rim, leaving the micro-trim exposed to the paint. • For trimless Finish Components: Mask the inside and outside surfaces of the entire rim, but leave the top 1/16” (2mm) of the rim’s outside surface exposed to the paint, since this will be visible when the Finish Component is installed on the speaker. (See Figure 37 .)

F I G U R E 37 3. Prime the grille with XIM Primer/Bonder (or similar) in a spray can. Carefully follow the directions on the can. (The primer helps prevent paint from clogging the Finish Component’s micro perforations.) 4. Thin the paint to a ratio of 1:1 paint-to-water, and strain it through a standard mesh strainer to remove any lumps. 5. Use a small touch-up gun or capspray gun with a #3 tip for painting. Set the nozzle with a medium to wide fan, and set the pressure regulator to 60psi. Lightly spray the front of the Finish Component in three quick strokes from approximately 10 inches away. Hold the gun at a slight angle to ensure that paint covers the side walls of the perforations. Let the paint set for a minute, then turn the Finish Component 90° and repeat the painting process. (See Figure 38 .) Let the paint dry thoroughly, then turn the Finish Component another 90° and repeat the painting procedure two more times from the remaining two directions. This will ensure that all sides and edges of the Finish Component’s perforations will be painted. After the paint has thoroughly dried, turn the Finish Component over and repeat the entier procedure on its back side.

ATTACHING THE FINISH COMPONENT TO THE SPEAKER IMPORTANT: Before attaching the Finish Component to the speaker, be sure your hands are clean! 1. The finish component inserts into the groove created by the Mud Dam and the outer edge of the Architectural Series Speaker component. It is secured in place by an engineered Prescision-Fit ball bearing assembly.
F I G U R E 38 6a. For metal Finish Components only: While the paint is still wet, inspect the Finish Component and make sure that none of the micro perforations are filled with paint. If any are, you should be able to use compressed air to blow the paint out of the perforation.
2. Insert about half of the Finish Component rim into the groove on the speaker. Gently fit the remaining half of the rim by working around the speaker, fitting the rim into the groove as you go. (See Figure 39 and Figure 40.)
NOTE: If you find any perforations that are plugged with paint after the paint has dried, use a straight pin or sewing needle to carefully remove the paint. 6b. For cloth Finish Components only: While the paint is still wet, inspect the Finish Component and make sure that all of the areas of exposed grille cloth are properly covered.
F I G U R E 39
7. Once the Finish Component is painted and dry, carefully remove the painter’s tape from the rim and replace the scrim cloth on the back of the Finish Component.
