Deepa Thomas
Deepa Thomas a former trustee of Rhonde Island School of Design and a Commissioner of the Asian Art Museum combines her journalistic skills with her passion for cooking and healthy living, constructing a simple slow carb New Indian cuisine. Upon learning that rice and bread were the culprits for her husband’s Type 2 diabetes, Deepa Thomas deconstructed and reinvented her native Indian cuisine. Deepa made anew seventy slow carb recipes, incorporating time-‐saving Western cooking techniques, breaking-‐news research on gut health and weight loss, and Ayurvedic wisdoms ("When diet is right, medicine is of no need; and when diet is wrong, medicine is of no use."). After six months of cooking and eating "New Indian," Deepa lost twenty pounds and freed her husband from a ten-‐year routine of insulin shots. Part cookbook and memoir, Deepa’s Secrets introduces breakthrough slow carb and gut-‐healing recipes that are simple and nutrient-‐packed, without sacrificing its rich South Asian flavors. On a mission to demystify and make healthy an “exotic” cuisine, Deepa shares shortcuts and techniques that will make "New Indian" everyday fare. Bold and intimate, Deepa’s Secrets will undoubtedly change your cooking, and quite possibly your life. Deepa is gifting all her proceeds from Deepa’s Secrets to FoodCorps, a nonprofit that connects children to healthy food in American schools.

Muon Van Written in a spare, lyrical style using fresh, evocative imagery, In a Village by the Sea tells the story of longing for the comforts of home. In circular fashion, this simple story’s narration unfolds, with great power behind the few words on each page. The intense illustrations, done in pencil and digitally colored, set human and animal characters into seascapes and interior scenes in an almost timeless Vietnam and extend the story far beyond the words. The visual surprises here are a faithful, loving dog that appears in most illustrations and leads eyes to “a brown cricket, humming and painting” beyond a hole in the wall. The illustrations, with strong references to Chinese pen-‐and-‐ink landscapes and Japanese woodblock prints of the sea, will draw readers to this book again and again. -‐ 2015 NY Public Library 100 Books for Reading and Sharing List -‐ Pennsylvania Center for the Book Best Children's Books of 2016 -‐ Northern California Book Award Winner By Muon Van & April Chu (April could not join us today) Muon Van a critically-‐acclaimed picture book author, soft and chewy chocolate chip cookie baker and cordless vacuum operator.
