The Rock seeks to bounce back from its second loss of the season tonight as it hosts Mercyhurst in the opening game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division season. TIED FOR BEST-EVER START: The Rock’s 11-2 record to open the season matches the best-ever marks in program history. The 1945-46, 1952-53, 1963-64 and 1971-72 Rock teams also owned 11-2 records after 13 games. This season was the first time in school history that the Green and White won their first 10 games. The previous best was a 9-0 start by the 1963-64 squad coached by Hank Baierl. REYNOLDS’ RUN OF SUCCESS: A win tonight will move Kevin Reynolds, who currently owns a 32-10 record, into a tie with Cliff Wettig (1972-73) for the most wins recorded by a Rock men’s basketball head coach in his first two seasons. PUTTING IT IN PERSPECTIVE: Reynolds needs eight wins to match the win total compiled by California’s Bill Brown and Edinboro’s Greg Walcavich in their first two seasons at their respective schools, the highest total for any of the current PSAC head coaches. Brown had a 40-16 record in his first two seasons at Cal, while Walcavich was 40-25 in his first two seasons at Edinboro. Reynolds’ 32 wins is two more than Millersville’s Fred Thompson (30-24) and three more than Clarion’s Ron Righter (29-23) had in their first two seasons at their respective schools. SCOUTING THE ROCK: Senior guard Michael Evans Jr. leads The Rock in scoring with a 14.5 points per game average. Junior forward Maron Brown is second on the team in scoring at 14.3 ppg and leads the team in rebounding with a 10.7 per game average. Junior guard Jabril Bailey averages 13.9 points and 9.7 rebounds per game and senior guard Maurice Douglas adds 11.0 points per game. Senior point guards Cecil Brown and Andre Tarver chip in 8.3 and 7.7 points per game, respectively. As a team, The Rock scores 83.9 ppg and allows foes 73.7 ppg. SCOUTING MERCYHURST: The Lakers, coached by former Rock assistant Gary Manchel, also have a very balanced scoring attack that includes only one player with a doubledigit scoring average but five players who are scoring eight or more points per game. Junior guard Heiden Ratner, a transfer from Division I James Madison University, leads the team in scoring with a 16.2 ppg average. His supporting cast includes senior forward Jordan Armstrong at 9.8 points and a team-best 5.7 rebounds per game, junior guard Shelton Jackson at 9.4 ppg, grad-student forward Christian Cornelius at 8.9 ppg and senior forward Elliot Engelmann at 8.7 ppg. Armstrong was a preseason All-PSAC-West selection. As a team, the Lakers average 76.7 ppg and allow opponents 68.2 ppg. COMMON OPPONENTS: The Rock and Lakers have played four common opponents in the last two weekends. Both teams beat Cheyney (SRU 96-86, MC 68-67) and Millersville (SRU 73-61, MC 73-72 in overtime) and both teams lost to West Chester (SRU 92-83, MC 75-71). The only difference in outcomes came in games against Shippensburg. Mercyhurst beat the Red Raiders 76-64 while The Rock lost a 77-74 decision.

LAST YEAR’S MEETINGS: The Rock beat the Lakers both times the teams met in the 2008-09 season, 68-53 Jan. 14 in Erie and 72-69 Feb. 7 in Slippery Rock. Denell Stephens had a 20-point, 18-rebound “double-double” and Kyle Camper added a 10-point, 12-assist “d-d” to lead The Rock to victory in the first game. Brian McTear scored a team-high 15 points for the Lakers. Stephens, the 2009 PSAC-West “Player of the Year,” scored a game-high 30 points in the second-game win. McTear and Armstrong scored 18 and 17, respectively, for the Lakers. REGULAR-SEASON RUN ENDS: The Jan. 3 loss to Shippensburg snapped a string of 18 consecutive regular-season wins by The Rock, who prior to that game had not lost a regular-season game since Jan. 31, 2009, when it dropped a 94-78 decision at PSAC-Western Division rival Indiana. All told, The Rock has won 19 of its last 22 games and 22 of its last 26 outings after having a 10-6 record entering its Jan. 24, 2009, home game against PSAC-Western Division rival Clarion. SECOND STRAIGHT STRONG START: The Rock’s 10-0 start this winter was three wins better than its opening run a year ago. The back-to-back strong starts are a stark contrast to the 2007-08 season, when SRU won a total of seven games. STIFFER CHALLENGES AHEAD: The Rock’s first 12 foes this winter currently have a combined .436 winning percentage (65-84 record). Conversely, The Rock’s foes in the final 14 regular-season games have a .613 winning percentage (54-34 record). Four of SRU’s seven PSAC-Western brethren, the only teams the Green and White will face between now and the end of the regularseason schedule, currently have winning records. Overall, Rock 2009-10 foes currently own a 119-118 record (.502). NATIONAL RECOGNITION: The Rock received votes in the Dec. 22 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II national poll. According to records compiled by Division II men’s basketball historian John Kean, the sports information director at Missouri Science & Technology, the last time SRU was listed in an NABC top-25 national poll was at the end of the 1989-90 season. 20TH ANNIVERSARY: This winter marks the 20th anniversary of The Rock’s only nationally ranked team. The 1989-90 team, under the guidance of Bob Barlett, finished the season ranked second in the nation by the NABC. That lofty ranking in the March 5, 1990 poll marked the seventh time in as many weeks the Green and White were included in the top 25. SRU entered the top 25 as the No. 18 team Jan. 22 with an 11-3 record and gradually moved upward. The Rock was ranked 14th with a 14-3 record Jan. 29, 13th with a 16-3 mark Feb. 5, ninth with an 18-3 record Feb. 12, sixth with a 21-3 record Feb. 19 and fourth with a 22-3 mark Feb. 26 before being the No. 2 team with a 23-3 record in the final regularseason poll. The Rock then lost three straight postseason games to finish the season with a 23-6 record, one of three times in Rock men’s basketball history that a Green and White squad rang the victory bells a school-record 23 times. TRANSFER TRANSFUSION: The 2009-10 Rock roster features six newcomers via transfer, including four players with NCAA Division I experience, and only three players who began their collegiate careers at SRU. The following is a look at how the 14-player 2009-10 roster was compiled: Player Previous School Jabril Bailey Campbell University Cecil Brown Morehead State University Maron Brown Cecil College Jade Burka Slippery Rock University Rashiid Coleman Slippery Rock University Maurice Douglas CC of Baltimore County Catonsville Mike Evans Jr. Morehead State University Tommy Kelly Slippery Rock University R.J. A YEAR AGO: The Rock opened its 2008-09 season with seven consecutive games before Mansfield handed the Green and White a 78-65 loss Dec. 16, 2008, in the first round of the Indiana (Pa.) Regional Medical Center Classic. That was the first of six losses SRU would suffer in the span of nine games before winning 11 of its last 13 games en route to a second-place finish in the PSAC-Western Division standings and an appearance in the PSAC semifinals. Despite a 21-8 overall record and wins in nine of its last 10 games, The Rock was denied a berth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional tournament. SEASON TO REMEMBER: The 21 wins recorded by the 2008-09 team represented a 200% improvement over the previous winter’s victory total of seven and marked only the fourth time in school history an SRU men’s team recorded 20 victories. The Rock effort was led by senior forward Denell Stephens, the PSACWestern Division “Player of the Year,” and senior point guard Kyle Camper, who led the nation, all divisions, with a 10.3 assists per game average. Camper, who somehow garnered only second-team All-PSAC-West status in voting by the division’s head coaches, also set the conference record for single-season assists with 305, while Stephens set the school’s single-season “double-double” record with 15. LONG TIME COMING: Stephens was the first Rock men’s player to earn an All-America honor since 1991 when he attained honorable mention status from the Division II Bulletin. Both Camper and Stephens earned second-team All-Atlantic Region honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Stephens also earned second-team Daktronics, Inc., all-region honors in voting by the region’s sports information directors. TURNING PRO: Stephens (Luxembourg) and Camper (Germany) are two of three former Rock players currently playing professional basketball. Ken Ottrick, a member of The Rock’s 2007-08 squad, was the first-round draft pick and the seventh overall pick of the Premier Basketball League’s Vermont Frost Heaves.
