What to Know You are not alone — you can choose who you confide in and what resources you use What is a mental health concern? • If you notice a change in yourself, a friend or teammate that you are worried about • If you are worried for someone’s safety in an emergency situation What if a teammate comes to you? • Listen with open ears and without judgment • Let them know that they are not alone • Let a trusted campus resource know about the situation if you are concerned about the individual Examples of clarifying questions/I statements • I care about you. What to do next • Call a trusted campus resource – Counseling Center 651-690-6805 – Public Safety 651-690-8888 – Athletic Trainer – Head Coach – 911 (if necessary) • Do not leave the person alone • Let them know that you care about them • Consider impact on you and seek support for yourself
Positive Mental Health Ways to maintain positive mental health as a student-athlete • Get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep • Engage in daily mindfulness activities • Learn to manage your time well and stay ahead on schoolwork • Limit your social media and screen time to less than an hour a day • Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains & drink lots of water • Do at least one thing that makes you happy and one thing that makes someone else happy every day
