Lady Vol Athletic Training Team ENHANCE Team ENHANCE (Enhancing Nutrition, Health, Athletic Performance, Networking, Community and Education), a program to help female studentathletes with issues that affect performance, has been established by a group of University professional staff members and experts from the private sector. Issues such as nutrition, body composition, diet, eating disorders and mental health, and their effects on the health, well-being and performance of the female student-athlete, are dealt with through the guidelines, policies and procedures that have been established by Team ENHANCE. The following experts compose Team ENHANCE: the team physician, athletic trainers, eating disorder/addictions specialist, nutritionists, therapists/counselors, strength and conditioning coaches, exercise physiologist, coaches, athletic administrators, sport sociologist and sport psychologists. Through this integrated team, the staff provides education and early intervention for the student-athlete’s emotional, mental and physical health, well being and performance.
In December 1998, a new era dawned for Lady Vol athletic training, as the state-of-the-art University of Tennessee women’s athletics training room opened its doors. The 5,600 square-foot sports care center for female athletes stacks up as one of the nation’s best facilities devoted solely to women. The Lady Vol training room features a modality area and adequate space for functional rehabilitation, aerobic training, hydrotherapy and practice preparation (taping). Additionally, there are administrative areas, a private exam room and a private bathroom for drug testing. The modality area, with room for nine treatment tables, is equipped with the latest technology to care for athletes. Of the nine treatment stations, three feature adjustable high/low tables for manual therapy. With functional rehabilitation being the key factor in a student-athlete’s recovery from injury, a large portion of the facility is devoted solely to this purpose. There are two mat tables for stretching and other exercises and an abundance of space for proprioceptive and strengthening exercises. Also included in this sector is the aerobic training area, where student-athletes stay cardiovascularly fit to ensure a smooth transition back to practice and competition. Included among the cardiovascular equipment are stationary bikes, a treadmill, elliptical machines, a slide board, a Versa Climber and a UBE (upper body extremity) machine. Another impressive feature of the new facility is the hydrotherapy area. Along with two traditional whirlpools, there is also a pair of whirlpool spas. The larger one, which is 14 feet x 8 feet and five feet deep, allows athletes to have aqua-therapy at the training room rather than going to a large pool at the aquatic center. The three-foot-deep smaller spa measures 10 feet x 7 feet, providing a great deal of space for Lady Vols to loosen up sore muscles. The construction of this gem provides UT with an exceptional facility to match the top-notch personnel on hand to care for Lady Volunteer athletes.

Lady Vol Strength & Conditioning
Since 1992, the Lady Volunteer Strength and Conditioning program has played an integral role in the training and development of female athletes at the University of Tennessee. The Lady Vol strength and conditioning coaches, consisting of two full-time and two graduate assistant staff members, have two primary goals: to maximize strength and power, which will transfer to increased sport performance, and to decrease the likelihood and severity of injury. The Lady Vol weight room is approximately 4,500 square feet and equipped primarily with free weights, which allow for optimal functional training and athletic enhancement. Specialized equipment, including Olympic platforms and squat/power racks, allow for the specific environment for teaching proper technique to student-athletes, regardless of size. The strength staff is responsible for the design and implementation of programs for all 11 varsity sports. These programs feature resistance training and conditioning protocols, including plyometric, speed and aerobic/anaerobic training. The Lady Vol weight room environment is one of both camaraderie and competition at the highest levels. This facility and its staff are dedicated to meet the unique needs of Tennessee’s female student-athletes. The strength and conditioning coaches, athletic, trainers and sport coaches work very closely to design workouts with this purpose in mind: to challenge each student-athlete to reach her potential in her sport and be proud to be a Lady Vol.
