How To Write Awesome Book Descriptions With Ease! By Bart Hennin©
Hello, In this report you will discover how to write amazing book descriptions that GET YOU SALES! All too many authors who create otherwise terrific books, often fail to get people to want to read it because their 'book descriptions' FAIL to entice readers. Your book description is your OPPORTUNITY to entice readers to TAKE ACTION and actually READ your book! Think of it this way... If you went to Amazon to buy say, a blender... And you see one blender description that says, “12 speeds, 32 oz capacity”... ...and a 2nd blender description that said “Make delicious, restaurant quality smoothies, shakes and sauces with ease in the comfort of your home kitchen! This durable 12 speed, full quart capacity blender comes with a full 2 yr warranty and recipe book so you'll be blasting out tasty creations like a pro from the get go! This blender also cleans up with ease and has a patented 'energy saver' mode. Treat yourself and add this wonderful blending tool to your kitchen TODAY...You'll wonder how you ever got along without it!” Which would you buy?... You see, A good product description is more than just a “description”...It's an opportunity to not only “inform” prospects, but also get them excited enough to BUY! YOUR BOOK is also a “product”! Therefore, your book “description” is your opportunity to not only “inform” readers, but also to get them excited
enough to BUY YOUR BOOK(S)! We do this by... • Tapping into people's emotions (People buy on emotion!) • Using descriptive adjectives (that trigger good feelings & excitement) • Stressing BENEFITS (more on this shortly) • Actually ASKING the reader to READ the book! (what marketers term a “call to action” phrase). More on the above in a moment, but first, let's avoid some confusion... On Amazon, there are actually TWO book descriptions - The one that will appear as part of our actual book (i.e. usually appears on the back cover and/or the inside intro pages of your book)... That description has little effect on your listing rank (although it should still be catchy and make people want to buy the book!)... And the 2nd (longer) description is the one that appears on the Amazon listing “product description” page itself (This should be an extended and expanded version of the one in the book!).
Remember that we generally want this second “product listing description” to be LONG because it causes people to spend more time on
Amazon's listing page and AMAZON gives a search rank BOOST to books where people are spending more time on the listing. Now a long listing does no good if we bore our readers so they don't even read it... So, we want to make our descriptions as informative, enticing and exciting as possible so that people keep reading! (and ultimately buy!!). Remember that the PURPOSE of our book description is to get people to BUY the book! Let's consider each of the points mentioned above in more detail... Tapping into the emotions of our reader – What is it about our book that will trigger excitement in our reader's eyes? Is it adventure? Romance? A feeling of relaxation? Is the book an 'escape'?...A stress reliever? (it can be more than one of these!!)... In short, what's going to cause your reader to want to get YOUR book over every other book of that genre? Often you can trigger emotions in your reader by asking an enticing question... If you have created a murder mystery you might ask “What would you do if your soul mate was a serial killer?”... See how that evokes emotion in the reader? How it gets your customer “invested” in the story? And also shows how YOUR book is both unique and interesting? If you created a puzzle book you could say “Speed rounds included!...Are you up to the challenge? Time yourself to see if you are in the top 10%!” or some such (igniting people's competitive spirit) OR a different approach might be... “Lose yourself in these fascinating and stress relieving puzzle challenges”... Again we are appealing to our buyers' EMOTIONS.
Using descriptive adjectives – Using descriptive words to evoke emotion is another important component of good book descriptions... Words like 'unique', 'fascinating', 'wonderful', 'joyful', etc. But more than that, we want to create an emotional VISUALIZATION for our readers. For example, “These intricate and beautiful adult coloring illustrations will not only relieve your stress and provide hours of coloring enjoyment for you, but also carry you away to different worlds!” See how the adjectives “intricate” and “beautiful” evoke positive emotions? See how the phrase “hours of coloring enjoyment” creates VALUE on an emotional level? “This creative journal will take you on a joyful journey of self discovery that will give you new insights and and renewed happiness”...You get the idea... BONUS TIP! Notice how by using words like “you” and “your” we give people “ownership” of the book too?...It doesn't just 'relieve stress', it relieves YOUR stress... It doesn't just 'provide ' hours of coloring enjoyment', it provides hours of coloring enjoyment FOR YOU... Always look to replace words like “the”, “this”, and “them” with words like “you” and “your”.
Making the BENEFITS of your book clear – What problem will your book solve? OR what pleasure will it bring?... To do this successfully, it is important to distinguish between a "feature" and a "benefit". How to fix your sink is a feature...SAVING HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS on hiring a plumber is the BENEFIT.....Losing weight is a feature....Not being embarrassed to be in a bathing suit on the beach is the BENEFIT....our books need both features and benefits but the benefits are what make people BUY.... Benefits can include, • Stress relief • Escape • Happiness • Entertainment • Solving a problem • Enjoying a pastime • Eliminating frustration • etc. “Saving time” is a feature... Having more time to relax, do hobbies, be with family etc.; ...are the BENEFITS. Living healthier is a feature...Being around longer for your family, being able to stay more active so you can play with your kids/grand kids, living long enough to see your 5 yr old grandchild's wedding day, etc.; ...are BENEFITS. Always remember to present benefits on an EMOTIONAL level.
Actually ASKING the reader to READ the book! – In addition to the above, your book descriptions should ALL also explicitly ask the reader to
BUY THE BOOK! These are called “calls to action” and can include phrases like... • Treat yourself today • Challenge yourself today • End your [problem book solves] today These would be 'soft' calls to action... Stronger calls to action (so called 'hard' calls to action) can include more direct phrases like... • Get this book NOW and end your _____ problems forever! • Get your copy of this incredible story TODAY and prepare for the thrill ride of your life! • Get this book TODAY and start feeling more energy tomorrow! • You owe it to yourself to get your copy TODAY etc. ASIDE: Notice again, how the above calls to actions are also EMOTIONALLY based and stated in terms of BENEFITS? In short, DON'T depend on people buying on their own.... TELL THEM TO BUY!!!
