Acts 1:9-10 The Ascension and Session of Jesus: Why Did Jesus Go to Heaven? Jesus' ascension was his bodily rising into heaven when the Father withdrew him from his disciples' gaze and brought him into his holy presence (Acts 1:9-11). This event took place 40 days after his resurrection (Acts 1:3). Jesus foretold the ascension (John 6:62; 14:2,12; 16:5,10,17,28; 17:5; 20:17), and Luke described it (Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:6-11). Paul celebrated it and affirmed Christ's consequent lordship (Eph. 1:20; 4:8-10; Phil. 2:9-11; 1 Tim. 3:16). The book of Hebrews applies this truth for encouragement of the fainthearted (Heb. 1:3; 4:14; 9:24). Christ's ascension into heaven had two distinct effects on him. In terms of his divine nature, the Father restored the glory that his divine Son had possessed before the humiliation of his incarnation, suffering and death (John 17:5). In terms of his human nature, Christ was glorified as no human had ever been (1 Cor. 15:20-23,35-44). When Jesus ascended into heaven, he took his throne at the right hand of God the Father (Heb. 8:1; 12:2), fulfilling the promise to David that one of his sons would sit on his throne forever (2 Sam. 7:12-16; 1 Chron. 17:11-14; 2 Chron. 6:14-17; Psa, 89:1-4; 132:1112). From there Christ now reigns as king over all until all his enemies are put under his feet (1 Cor. 15:25) and he returns to rule over the new heavens and the new earth. The ascension establishes at least four important facts: First, Jesus was enthroned upon his entry into heaven in the seat of greatest honor except for the throne of his Father. To sit at the Father's right hand is to occupy the position of executive ruler on the Father's behalf. This means that Jesus has been given rightful rule over all of creation and is able therefore to secure the success of the gospel and the eventual eternal salvation of all who believe in him. Although he has not yet crushed all who oppose his reign, no power in heaven or on Earth can overrule him (Matt. 28:18; 1 Cor. 15:27; Eph. 1:20-22; 1 Pet. 3:22). His name is above all other names (Psa. 138:2; Phil. 2:9). Second, when Jesus ascended into heaven, he and the Father poured out the Holy Spirit on his church (John 16:7-14; Acts 2:33). The Spirit of God had always been present with his people, even in the Old Testament (Psa. 106:32-33; Isa. 63:7-14; Hag. 2:4-5). Yet with Christ's victory over death, the Spirit was poured out in anticipation of the day when the presence of God will fill the entire earth. He was sent to more people than ever before (Acts 1:8; Eph. 2:17-22). The Spirit, who leads and comforts the church in Christ's absence, so perfectly joins the will of Christ that he is said to be the Spirit of Christ and Christ to be the Spirit (Rom. 8:9,2 Cor. 3:17-18, 1 Pet. 1:11). These passages do not confuse the second and third persons of the Trinity (see theological article - The Trinity: One God or Three?), but refer to the harmony and identity of purpose between the Son and the Spirit. It is through the Spirit that Jesus is present with his church, even in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. Third, after completing his atoning work on the cross, ascending to the right hand of the Father and sending the Spirit to his church, Jesus has continued serving his followers as their royal high priest. This heavenly service is what theologians call Christ's "session." All who pray in Jesus' name find him accessible and powerful to help them (Heb. 4:14,16; 7:25; 9:24; 12:22-24; 13:6 -8).

He ministers before the Father on our behalf, representing us and pleading sympathetically for us because he knows our temptations (Rom. 8:34; Heb. 2:18; 4:15). Jesus' heavenly session is part of the means by which the benefits he obtained at the cross are applied to believers, including maintaining all believers in a state of forgiveness and justification (1 John 1:92:2). Fourth, just as we (as believers) are united with Christ in his death and resurrection (Rom. 6:5), we are also joined with him in his heavenly reign (Eph. 1:3,20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12). Just as Jesus' human nature reached heights of glorification when he began to reign over all as David's son and God's vice-regent, we also are promised that if we overcome, we will sit at his throne even as he sits at the throne of his heavenly Father (Rev. 3:21-22). In Jesus' heavenly reign we find a portrait of what will happen to the entirety of redeemed humanity at Christ's return. Although we will always remain mere creatures, we will be like him in his humanity (1 John 3:2). We will experience the wonder of being glorified images of God, creatures whom God has ordained from the beginning to rule over creation on his behalf (see theological article "Human Beings in God's Image: Who Am I?"). The Ephesians passages suggest, moreover, that in one sense our reign with Christ is not only future, but also present. Perhaps Paul had one or both of the following ideas in mind: (1) Our future heavenly destiny is so certain that it can be spoken of as present. (2) Jesus even now is reigning on behalf of his people, which is a great comfort to us. ► POINT-COUNTER-POINT: Alth ough God h as gr anted fr ee w ill to every human being, man is not in a position to adequately guide himself alone. Man (whether righteous or wicked) cannot understand all the long-term consequences of his daily choices (in both word and deed), but God certainly does understand and is very much involved in the lives of those made in His image. He is Master over everything--including that which we do not understand and cannot presently perceive. I believe that this verse addresses the providential guiding of Almighty God. God knows the end from the beginning; He knows how to work out things for good in the ultimate sense for those who love Him (cf. Rom. 8:28). ► In Apocalyptic vision John saw "in the midst of the throne ... a Lamb as though it had been slain." The reference is without question to Christ. Two things are manifest, first that He occupies the position of proper Deity. He is in the midst of the throne. Secondly that He retains the evidences of suffering. It is "a Lamb as though it had been slain." This double fact speaks forevermore of the deepest fact that lies behind man's redemption. This fact is that of the pain of God. ► After his resurrection Jesus appeared to the disciples and others clothed in perfect humanity (1 Cor. 15:1-4). As is evidenced in John 20:24-29 Jesus, after his resurrection, was/is still fully human having scars yet in his hands and feet, etc. John 20:27 says, "Then [Jesus] said to Thomas, Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe." Jesus is forever the God-man - fully God and fully man. Though he is in all his glory, he is still a man - see Revelation 1.

Where: Maggianos When: Sept. 12, 2015 Time: 10:00 – 3:00 Guest Speaker: Mar gar et Rober tson (Satur day) & Marvin Robertson (Sunday) Parking Stall Bump Out: Phase 1 Layout Considerations The objective of the layout design is to maximize the number of stalls, while following the guidelines for 60 degree angle parking. The layout of the RSR parking facility must be flexible enough to adapt to future changes in vehicle dimensions. By using the 60 degree angle layout for each new stall this will allow us maximum use of our existing parking lot space. The stall and aisle dimensions will be compatible with our future plans and use of this facility. We are planning for a wide mix of vehicle sizes using the following three approaches for handling the layout: 1. Design all spaces for large-size vehicles (about 6 feet wide and 17-18 ft long). 2. Design some of the spaces for large vehicles and some for small vehicles (these are about 5 ft wide and 14-15 ft long). 3. Provide a layout with intermediate dimensions (too small for large vehicles and too big for small vehicles). For the RSR design, we will work with stalls and aisles called "single side modules". A single side module is one access aisle servicing a row of parking on one side of the parking lane on the right (entry) and on the left (exit). The width of each aisle will be 11 feet using a 60 degree angle at which the parking stalls are oriented. Stall Width: For simplicity, the stall width is measured perpendicular to the vehicle. Stall Length: The length of the stall will be large enough to accommodate most of the vehicles. The length of the stall refers to the longitudinal dimension of the stall.
