“We are such stuff as dreams are made on!” A Tremendous Tempest The Tempest Produced and Performed by Malmesbury Primary School
SECOMBE THEATRE 25th November 2015 Appraised by KATE HUGHES
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Malmesbury Primary School on their wonderful production of The Tempest at the Secombe Theatre, Sutton. This was an accomplished and original production, and I’d like to highlight a few key elements which really stood out for me.
The entire cast worked fantastically as an ensemble creating the worlds of the island, morphing in and out of wonderful forest poses and creating Prospero’s cave. The ensemble also added to the emotional depth of the play through their reactions to what was happening on stage. This was evident in the love scene between Miranda and Ferdinand with the cast forming a circle around them, commenting on the action. There was a clear understanding of the comedic elements of this play which was handled with great energy and imagination, particularly when Trinculo and Stephano were reunited. There was a wonderful fluidity and energy to the piece that gave it a great pace aided be clear understanding of the story, allowing for seemless improvisation when needed. __
I’d also like to commend the cast on their clear understanding of the text which hugely impressed me. This great comprehension, aided by fluid speech and excellent vocal projection across the board allowed for engaging storytelling. This production was magical, witty and engaging! Huge congratulations to all the cast and crew who made it happen. I hope to see Malmesbury Primary School in the Festival again next year. Kate Hughes Shakespeare Schools Festival Venue Director
