Finite Element Analysis of a Bicycle Frame Abstract
Thomas Degen
While consulGng with an expert on bicycle construcGon, I have created an accurate model of a standard bicycle frame using Solidworks modeling tools. Using this model, which includes realisGc tubes and joints, as well as the only publicly available method for applying realisGc loads that would be experienced during regular use (combinaGons of riding situaGons, such as bumps, braking, swerving, pedaling etc.), I will be able to accurately predict the stresses exerted on a bicycle while it is in use under many different riding condiGons.
Results
As you can see in the picture below, the coasGng bike experienced stress in a few main areas, the fork and the seat post. This makes sense because there is a lot of force applied to the handlebars and to the fork, which causes the high stress in the area directly between them, and on the seat, which causes the high stress directly below it. Future studies will expand upon these results by looking at more loading situaGons, such as front braking, hiUng a bump, swerving, etc.
