Baseball At Home With Cameron For Four The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team opens a nine-game home stand Friday when it hosts Cameron in a four-game series at Nolan Ryan Field. The Javelinas and Aggies play a 6 p.m. single game Friday, a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a 1 p.m. single game Sunday. Even though the teams are in

the Lone Star Conference, these games won’t count in the conference standings. The stand continues March 24-26 when the LSC schedule

The Texas A&M-Kingsville beach volleyball team will make its second home appearance Wednesday when it hosts its first interstate opponent, Houston Baptist, at the athletic/intramural complex. Match time will be at 4 p.m. The Javelinas are 4-4 after dropping four matches in Arizona last week. They faced four nationally ranked squads in the competition. THE LONE STAR Conference is flexing its muscles this year. The league has been rated the best in NCAA Division II in two sports and near the top in all. Herosports.com ranks the conference each week and the LSC has been No. 1 in men’s basketball throughout the season. The LSC is also No. 1 in baseball. The conference is No. 2 in women’s basketball and No. 4 in softball. Last fall, the league was No. 3 in football and No. 4 in volleyball. There are as many as 24 conferences competing in Division II, the number depending on the sport.

IN THE JAVELINA baseball team’s 10-0 victory over Our Lady of the Lake last week at Ryan Field, the Javelinas had 16 players play in the game and seven pitchers were used. The pitchers allowed two singles. Nick Masarik, junior righthander from Columbus, started and was the winner. The Javelinas had 16 hits, led by Hunter Perkins, senior utility player from Victoria (East) who went four for six, had three runs batted in, scored three times and had a double. Alec Kana, senior outfielder from Bastrop, was three for three with an RBI.

AT THE SAME time the Javelinas were taking on OLLU, the Javelina softball team went against St. Edward’s in Austin. In the second game of a doubleheader, Victoria SchoonardSaborio, sophomore infielder from El Grove, Calif., was the second batter for the Javelinas in the top of the first, and hit a fence topper that gave the team a 1-0 lead. That ended up being the final score.

THE JAVELINA BASEBALL team will host its final “doesn’t count” series against a Lone Star Conference opponent this weekend when Cameron visits Nolan Ryan Field. The first three series against league teams don’t count in the LSC standings. The Javelinas have played Texas-Permian Basin and West Texas A&M in the two previous “doesn’t count” series. The teams will meet later in conference encounters. Beginning March 24-26, the matchups with LSC opponents will begin the quest for the league championship. The Javelinas will host Tarleton State on that weekend.

THIS WEEKEND’S CACTUS Cup in Javelina Stadium will afford the only opportunity to see the outdoor track and field team perform on the home turf this spring. It would be a good, competitive meet with three of the Lone Star Conference’s best men’s and women’s teams entered. Angelo State and Tarleton State will join the Javelinas in the event. MARCUS FRAZIER’S THREE-POINT goal that won the men’s basketball game against Texas-Permian Basin at the NCAA Division II South Central Region Championships Saturday in Golden, Colo., will go down as one of the best “shots” in Javelina athletic history. It came at the buzzer and gave the Javelinas a win over the Lone Star Conference champion Texas-Permian Basin Falcons. UTPB was seeded No. 2 in the regional meet while the Javelinas were the No. 7 seed. Some of the other “shots” through the years that live in Javelina lore have included: …The winning bucket by women’s basketball player Ashley White in the 2000-01 regional finals against Emporia (Kan.) State that sent the Javelinas to the Elite Eight. The score was tied at 6969 when she scored. …John Kardow’s field goal with less than two minutes remaining that gave the Javelinas a win over Southwest Texas and allowed the Javelinas to finish their first unbeaten, untied football season ever in 1967. …D.J. Johnson’s field goal against Central Oklahoma in 1992 that produced a conference championship for the Javelinas and sent them to the NCAA Division II regional playoffs in Topeka, Kan. …Hoegie Simmon’+s field goal at the buzzer that gave the Javelinas a win over arch-rival Southwest Texas in 1972-73. Simmons made the shot from the left corner, ran out the end doors and was halfway to the dressing room before a roar from the capacity crowd in the Steinke Center let him know, what he already knew, that the basket was good and the Javelinas had a 70-68 victory. THE WEATHER IS playing havoc with the Lone Star Conference spring sports schedule early in the season. Javelina baseball and softball games were altered last weekend because of the weather and numerous other league outdoor events have had to be changed, or cancelled, because of rain or lightning. The Javelinas’ four-game baseball series with Texas-Permian Basin had to be cut to two. The softball series with Texas Woman’s last weekend had to be changed several times before finally settling in on Sunday and Monday. The first beach volleyball matches were partially played in the rain, and colder than usual conditions. BEACH VOLLEYBALL WILL gets its first interstate match Wednesday when it hosts Houston Baptist. The Javelinas and HBU are two of the four beach volleyball programs in the state. There will be later matchups with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and TCU. Other Texas schools have indicated beach volleyball is in the future for their programs. (Continued on Page 4)

Currently, there are no divisions in beach volleyball. All schools in the NCAA, regardless of classification, participate at the same level. This means the NCAA Division II and III teams must compete with the likes of Southern California, Florida State, Arizona, etc., in the regulation season, and the postseason playoffs. FOR THE RABID football fan who finds it difficult to live without the sport in the off-season, Javelina spring football gets underway next week. The Javelinas will take the field for the first time at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 25. A change in the time schedule for the practices will see most of the week-day sessions at 7 p.m. The Saturday workouts, except for the spring game, will be at 10 a.m. The spring game is set for April 22 at 5 p.m. The Javelinas are coming off a 9-3 season that ended with the favorites riding a seven-game victory streak, including a win in the Live United Bowl in Texarkana, Ark. When the fall season begins, the Javelinas will have the second longest victory streak in NCAA Division II. Defending national champion Northwest Missouri has won 15 in a row. TWO LONE STAR Conference teams met for the NCAA Division II South Central Region women’s basketball championship Monday night in Pueblo, Colo. Angelo State and West Texas A&M reached the finals after two victories in the regional tournament. WTAM upset top-seeded Colorado State-Pueblo in the semifinals. The winner of Monday’s game advanced into the Elite Eight March 21-24 in Columbus, Ohio. LONE STAR CONFERENCE notes: …Jeff Huebner is the new head volleyball coach at Texas Woman’s. He has been the interim head volleyball coach at Middle Tennessee State for the past year and before that was an assistant at the school. Huebner was the first coach for the College of Coastal Georgia in 2011 and was there for five seasons. He was a club and high school coach in Illinois before going to Coastal Georgia. Huebner is a graduate of Illinois State where he played volleyball. NCAA DIVISION II notes: …After seasons as head women’s basketball coach at Northeastern Oklahoma, Randy Gipson is retiring. He was coach at the school when it was a member of the Lone Star Conference and met the Javelinas twice each season. Northeastern is now in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
