Toward the end, I’d had enough. I didn’t want to talk to people. Have you ever had enough? What did you do? How did it make you feel? I didn’t want people to stop me, to ask how I was doing. How does someone asking, “How are you doing?” make you feel? Do you tell people the truth when you are asked this question?

Because we were pilgrims on the same journey, he became one of my best friends. Do you have friends who are on the same journey you are? How does your connection with these fellow pilgrims differ from your relationships elsewhere? Show up and shut up. Who do you have in your life who listens to you? Remember to thank them. Who do you encourage by listening to them? We’d sit in silence for thirty minutes, sipping coffee. What kinds of feelings and thoughts does silence bring out in you? Is it different when you are with a friend?

I’m not afraid of being dead; it’s the getting dead that bothers me. Do you feel this way too, or is it different for you? Why? As I walked with JJ, he faced it with courage, dignity, and grace. And I’m hoping to pass that on to Rod. What would it look like for you to face your trials with courage, dignity, and grace? How does one develop those traits? Can you be courageous and yet afraid?

Everyone I meet is on a pilgrimage or a journey, and in the providence of God, our paths cross. Whose paths have you crossed while on your journey? What was the result? Where would you be without those people? God was with me even on the worst of days. What was your worst day? Where was God? How did you know?
