After winning their last two games, the SBU Bearcats will celebrate Homecoming this weekend when they host the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm. The Bearcats are coming off a huge 31-23 win at Central Oklahoma. The Crimson Storm have rotated wins and losses this season, winning last Saturday over Bacone 50-29. It should be an entertaining game on Saturday, as both teams employ a spread no-huddle attack. Junior SBU quarterback Steve Gachette continues his record-setting career for the Bearcats. He ranks second in the nation in Division II in total offense (364 yds/game) and seventh in the nation in passing yards (1809).Already this season, he’s set single game school records for total offense (573 yards) and passing yards (459) as well as career marks for passing attempts (1198) and total offense (8672) which added to the ten individual marks he held coming into the year. WR Johnnie King, who led the nation in receptions per game (89 grabs in 10 games) in 2008, is tied for 33rd nationally in receiving yards per game (84). SBU ranks sixth nationally in Division II in total offense (470 ypg) and 11th in passing offense (303.7 ypg). King and teammates John Austin and Charles Johnson are close in receptions per game with Austin at 5.5, King at 5.33 and Johnson at 5.17. LB Jarred Schumpert is tied for sixth nationally in tackles per game at 11.8. Schumpert has led or tied for the team lead in tackles in his three previous seasons with SBU. He is also tied for 11th with 2.0 tackles for loss/ game. As a team, the Bearcats are 13th in net punting at 35.94 yds/punt. THE COACHES AND THE ALL-TIME SERIES Bearcat head coach Keith Allen is in his third season at the helm of the Bearcats. He’s already engineered a significant turnaround, moving the ‘Cats from 0-11 his first year as interim coach, to 5-6 in 2008. Mike Cochran is in his fourth season with the Crimson Storm and is 19-17. He’s in his ninth season overall at 65-29. This is the first meeting between the two squads. LAST GAME FOR THE SBU BEARCATS SBU wins thriller over Central Oklahoma 31-23 EDMOND, Okla. -- The SBU Bearcats picked up win number two with a thrilling 31-23 victory over Central Oklahoma, spoiling the Bronchos’ homecoming. “This was a great one! Our kids played their tails off,” said head coach Keith Allen. “I’m happy for our kids and for our program. I’m fired up about our running game (250 yards on 54 carries) and the defense played well.” The Bronchos (1-5) broke on top in the first quarter on a 60yard pass from Brandon Noohi to Ryan Gallimore with 6:20 left. The Bearcats (2-4) tied the game on a 44-yard run by Thad Everson. Early in the second quarter, SBU grabbed the lead on a 25-yard strike from Steve Gachette to Johnnie King. UCO tied the game a minute later on an 18-yard pass from Noohi to Kendall Hendricks. But right back came the Bearcats, using a 15-yard rush from Justin Duhaney to go on top 21-14 at the 9:04 mark. SBU would add to their margin five minutes later on a 15-yard pass from Gachette to Charles Johnson, and went to the break up 28-14. UCO cut into the margin with a third quarter 27-yard field goal by Chris Robbs. Early in the fourth, the Bronchos cut further into the SBU lead on a 21yard run by Noohi. The Bearcats would get the ball with 7:06 left in the fourth quarter and would milk the clock with a 14-play, 77-yard drive, capped by 19-yard field goal by Brock Jolly. The Bearcats’ Clayton Davis would end the UCO comeback attempt with an endzone interception on a fourth and ten play from the SBU 26-yard line with 51 seconds left. Allen added, “I think we focused too much on our opponent the first few weeks. We’ve been in every game we’ve played except one. Our mistakes hurt us in those first few games and we’ve cut them back in these last two. We’re now better focused each game on becoming a better football team.” Everson led the Bearcats with 117 yards on 19 carries. Gachette added 78 yards on the ground while Duhaney picked up 71. Gachette was 27 of 45 for 291 yards passing, two touchdowns and three interceptions. John Austin had 11 catches for 118 yards. Tyrin Holt led the defense with nine total tackles.

NEXT UP FOR THE SBU BEARCATS

The Bearcats remain at home next week as they welcome the Riverhawks of Northeastern State. SBU will be looking for a little payback after last year’s contest, when the winless Riverhawks got their first win of 2008 against the Bearcats in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. NSU is currently 1-5 on the season and host Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday evening. Their lone win came at home against East Central 17-7. Kenny Evans is the NSU head coach.

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The SBU Bearcats defeated the Grand View Vikings, 52-14, and picked up their fourth win of the season. The Bearcats broke an individual passing record, broke a kicking record, and tied an individual passing record. The fourth win of the 2008 campaign marks only the second time since 1991 SBU has chalked up more than three times in a single season. SBU had 570 yards of offense and picked up 27 first downs. Steve Gachette was 25-35-1 for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Gachette, with 34 career touchdown passes, now holds the record for career touchdown passes, held by SBU’s Robert Clardy, who logged 32 touchdown passes during this career from 2003-06. Gachette now has 19 touchdown passes on the 2008 season, which ties the single-season record by Chris Lowe (2001). Jeff Finnell rushed for 126 yards on 18 carries. “Our kids played well today, said SBU’s head coach Keith Allen. “It was good to get the younger guys into the game, especially in front of the Homecoming crowd. Game time experience is invaluable for all of our players. We were able to play our style – and get the things done we needed to get done. I was really happy that we were able to honor the first SBU football team of 1983. I hope they were excited about what they saw today.” The Bearcats struck first, as Finnell ran for a touchdown from 11 yards out, giving SBU the early 7-0 lead. Grand View answered 6 minutes later, as Catarino Cantu capped a 12-play, 63-yard drive with a two-yard run to tie the game at seven. SBU scored the next five touchdowns and added a field goal. With the score 14-7, Finnell delighted the Homecoming crowd with a 51-yard run down the left side for a touchdown, giving the Bearcats a 21-7 lead. Moments later, Gachette set the record for most touchdown passes in a career (his 33rd of his two-year career), as he found Thaddeus Sanders in the end zone. That touchdown passed the record set by Clardy, who now serves as Gachette’s quarterback coach. Justin Finch converted seven straight extra points today, giving him 35 of the season, giving him the single-season record, formerly held by SBU’s Ryan Smith during the 2005 season. During the halftime ceremony, members of the 1983 inaugural football team were honored at midfield.
