Belize and Guatemala will enchant you. From Maya temples to jungle trails. The thrill dives deep, like a plunge into the Caribbean, reemerging with each toucan’s squawk and howler monkey’s roar. Days filled with wonders that stop you in your tracks—or flippers, as the case may be. We're thrilled to have you join us.

NEVER SUBCONTRACTED We operate our own trips around the globe. That way we control the quality—and we're fully responsible for your great experience.
TWO SUPPORT VANS You have brought us such joy over the years and 12 Backroads trips. Thank you for all the research and hard work in making our trips joyful memories that we will always treasure. Candice Nadler - Excelsior, MN
Click HERE to read more guest reviews
We provide two support vans on all of our trips* so you can count on us to be there when you need us, regardless of the route you take.
THREE LEADERS Our trips have three leaders*, for an average 6:1 guest-to-leader ratio. Guests consistently score our leaders 9.7 out of 10, telling us they make all the difference.
THOUGHTFUL TRIP DESIGN We know how to create exceptional travel experiences, ensuring that you get the most from every moment as your trip unfolds.
MULTIPLE DAILY ROUTES Being able to choose among several expertly designed routes each day gives you the freedom to enjoy the best of a region at your own pace.
WE CELEBRATE MIXED ABILITIES To accommodate varied activity levels, you need three leaders, two vans, multiple route options, detailed directions, a rating system showing if shuttles are required, and plenty of well-matched riding/hiking companions. *95% of Backroads guests travel with the support of two or more vans and three leaders. The remaining 5% are on trips with very few guests where only one van and two leaders are needed to maintain our high standards.

Activity Level As with other Level 1-2 Backroads trips, the distances traveled are on the shorter and easier side, though it might feel little harder as you hike the stairs at Tikal and La Lancha hotel due to the warm weather.
We want to make sure you’re on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Accommodations The hotels on this trip are among the best the region has to offer, and allow us to experience three distinct regions and eco-climates. They may, however, seem more rustic than other Backroads hotels, ranging from cabins with thatched roofs in the rain forest to more modern villas on the beach. La Lancha’s authentic cabins blend well into the surroundings, but the walls are thin and you may hear your neighbors moving around along with the sounds of monkeys and birds outdoors.
Border Crossings On this trip we have the pleasure of venturing from Belize to Guatemala and back again. On all our trips we make every effort to facilitate crossing international borders by removing as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible. Often we are able to create a seamless experience. But even with all the organization and effort of our leaders, sometimes border crossings take time. With a little patience we hope to make this experience as enjoyable and easy as possible.
Road Maintenance Belize and Guatemala are incredible destinations for adventure and cultural interaction. However, due to the tropical climate and under-developed infrastructure, road maintenance is a continual challenge. Transfers can be bumpy and options for bike routes are limited. We’ve chosen the best routes for your trip, with a combination of quieter dirt roads and more traveled paved options.

emerge from the cave, enjoy a plunge in the refreshing natural pool in front of the Barton Creek Outpost.
On the first day of the trip, meet your Backroads Trip Leaders (the folks in Backroads T-shirts) at 8 a.m. at the Radisson Fort George Hotel & Marina (+501-223-3400), located at 2 Marine Parade in Belize City. (For more information on this hotel, see “Where to Stay Before & After Your Trip.”) Please arrive dressed in comfortable clothing and bring your luggage and a daypack with your rain gear and anything else you may need for today’s activities (your luggage will be transported to our first night’s hotel).
Afterward, hop in the shuttle for the journey to our final destination, Blancaneaux Lodge. Director Francis Ford Coppola purchased the abandoned Blancaneaux Lodge in the 1980s after falling in love with the stunning location—you’ll understand why as you soak in the property’s remote setting and settle into your cabana, adorned with rich local textiles and crafts. This evening we gather for a welcome reception before dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. Lodging: Blancaneaux Lodge
Day 2
Walking & Hiking Options: Big Rock Falls Route: 3 Miles (400’ elevation gain) Mountain Ridge Route: 7 Miles (1,300’)
Shuttle to Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center 45 Minutes
After a hearty breakfast overlooking Privassion Creek, we take off by foot to explore the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve and the jungle-clad hills of Elijio Panti National Park. Join our expert local guide to look for fresh jaguar tracks and learn about traditional medicinal plants used by the Maya thousands of years ago. Marvel at delicate orchids and observe charismatic bird species such as the keel-billed toucan and the blue-crowned mot-mot.
Guided Zoo Tour 1½ Hours Shuttle to Barton Creek 45 Minutes Barton Creek Cave Canoe Adventure 1½ Hours Shuttle to Blancaneaux 45 Minutes
Welcome to Belize! After meeting we shuttle to the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center, set on 29 acres of tropical savanna. The zoo’s collection features over 150 animals native to Belize, all of which have been orphaned, rescued or rehabilitated. The zoo’s director takes us on a private tour, giving us the chance to get up close and personal with many of the animals (including the elusive jaguar!).
Take a break by a cooling waterfall for lunch and maybe even enjoy an energizing dip in the creek below! From here you can choose to continue hiking back to the hotel, meandering along old logging trails in the tropical pine forest along granite rock outcroppings, or catch a ride in the van.
Following lunch on the grounds, we shuttle to the traditional Mennonite settlement of Upper Barton Creek. These settlers first came to Belize in 1958 from other Mennonite communities in Mexico, Belize and the US, and they continue to live and work without modern machinery, cars, electricity or phones.
Back at the lodge, enjoy the spa or time at the pool. Or take part in one of the many activities offered by the hotel, including mountain biking or horseback riding.
We make our way to nearby Barton Creek Cave and grab our paddles to explore an ancient Maya waterway inside a mountain by canoe. The Maya believed the cave was the entrance to the nine levels of the underworld and used it for ritual burials. With batterypowered spotlights, you can see centuries-old Maya pottery and other artifacts resting on the cave’s natural ledges, as well as huge stalactites stretching from the ceiling to Barton Creek’s calm waters. Then we continue on our way to the protected biotope of Cerro Cahuí for a hike through subtropical rainforest. The name cahuí, meaning crocodile, was given to the mountain because of its shape when seen from the opposite side of the lake—like a giant crocodile rising out of the water. Hike to stunning miradors (lookouts) over lakes Petén Itzá and Sacpetén while you keep an eye out for the area’s incredible wildlife, including ocellated turkeys, agoutis, and howler and spider monkeys.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR FAMILY BREAKAWAY TRIP
Shuttle to Start of Bike Ride 1 Hour Biking Options: Journey of the Jaguar Route: 10 Miles* (500’ elevation gain) Tikal Route: 17 Miles (600’)
We understand that older teens and 20-somethings are increasingly sophisticated, social and curious about the world around them. And also so busy! A Family Breakaway Trip is the perfect opportunity to maximize your time together.
Tikal Guided Hike 1½ Hours Shuttle to La Lancha 1 Hour *with shuttle
How does it work?
After a hearty breakfast we depart for Tikal National Park, a World Heritage site and sure highlight of the trip. Once the largest city of the Maya civilization, Tikal flourished between AD 200 and 900. What remains are 3,000 ancient structures within 6 square miles, highlighted by six Mesoamerican step pyramids.
Our Family Breakaway Trips are designed with young adults in mind. Other families will be traveling with at least one older teen or 20something, creating a built-in group of peers.
Activities Family Breakaway Trips are ideal for active families—routes and activities are more challenging than on Family Trips with younger kids. However, we always offer options so you can choose how much (or how little) you want to do each day.
Hop on your bike to begin the journey to these majestic ruins. Spin on a quiet paved road as you make your way through the park’s lush vegetation. Upon arrival at the ruins, we enjoy a bite to eat before the start of our tour. Our local guide then takes us through the grounds, offering an in-depth interpretation of the citadel. As you look up at the pyramids, watch for monkeys, parrots and white-nosed coatis, all among the many species that call this ancient site home. Take an up-close look at the elaborate glyphs on an altar or get a bird’s-eye view from a pyramid summit. Once we’ve finished exploring, a shuttle takes us back to La Lancha.
Trip Leaders Family Breakaway Trip Leaders serve as friendly guides—not chaperones—whose genuine passion for travel inspires young adults to explore independently.
Alcohol
Tonight, enjoy some downtime at the hotel before we meet for dinner. Lodging: La Lancha
Legal drinking age varies from country to country. Even if local laws permit it, the sole responsibility remains with parents to decide whether alcohol is appropriate for their teens.

This afternoon you’re free to enjoy the resort’s amenities: take a dip in the pool, play a game of volleyball on the beach, jump in a kayak, or just relax with a book.
From here, we jump back onto our bikes and continue our journey to the seaside Garifuna village of Hopkins. Make your way through lush greenery along the Sittee River, through the charming village of Hopkins to our home on the beach, Almond Beach Resort.

Day 7
Set on a 7-mile stretch of white sandy beaches, this luxury resort offers ideal access to incredible snorkeling, fishing and scuba diving, and is the perfect base for exploring nearby Hopkins Village. Tonight’s dinner is on your own in town; ask your leaders for recommendations on their favorite local spots. Lodging: Almond Beach Resort
Cultural Tour 1 Hour or Yoga 1 Hour Shuttle to Dangriga Airstrip 45 Minutes Flight to Belize City 20 Minutes
For your final morning, you may choose to grab a mat and stretch out in a yoga class by the sea or embark on a cultural excursion into the town of Hopkins Bay to learn more about the Garifuna culture. The Garifuna people, now dispersed along the Caribbean coast, descended from West Africans who were captured and sent to the Americas on slave ships. Shipwrecked just off the island of St. Vincent, they eventually settled there and intermarried with the local Carib people. According to tradition, the Garifuna first arrived in Belize on November 19th, 1802, a day that is now celebrated with drums, pagentry and dancing.
