SCANDAL’S BELLAMY YOUNG—FAST BECOMING OUR FAVORITE FICTIONAL FIRST LADY—COUNTS HER BLESSINGS. By Linda Childers

ON’T BOTHER ASKING BELLAMY YOUNG TO DISH ANY DIRT ABOUT UPCOMING TWISTS ON SCANDAL, the smash ABC TV show revolving around Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), crisis manager to the president of the United States (Tony Goldwyn) and their risqué romance. Young, who plays long-suffering first lady Mellie Grant, says she often has no idea what’s in store for her character until she walks on set. Still, she—like the show’s devoted fans—relishes the unpredictable drama. “I love how [creator and writer] Shonda Rhimes gives all of her characters equal footing, and allows them to explore their flaws and greatness,” says the Asheville, N.C.-born star, who has appeared on such TV shows as Criminal Minds, Scrubs and The Mentalist. Originally slated to be on just three episodes during Scandal’s first season, Young, 45, quickly earned a spot as a series regular. Between shooting Scandal’s fourth season, as well as the upcoming film Day Out of Days co-starring Melanie Griffith, she shared a few (not-soscandalous) secrets with Spry Living: I’m in no way as bold as Mellie—to be that untethered is a gift. eating fried chicken]. Last Halloween, many of the show’s fans posted photos on social media dressed as their favorite Mellie. It was so much fun. I have three rescue cats—Sadie, Max and Button—and a Chihuahua-pug mix named Bean. They have taught me so much about unconditional love. I’ve fostered shelter animals and even helped some find homes. It’s incredible to help an animal find their person. One of the great blessings of living in Southern California is that I can hit the hiking trails 11 and a half months of every year. Hiking helps me clear my head while also giving me a good workout. Sometimes I’ll even use the time to practice my lines for the show. I practice Ashtanga yoga weekly. It keeps me strong and gives me peace of mind. I also meditate every night. It’s my way of letting the day go. I feel incredibly grateful to be given the opportunity at my age to play such a nuanced and complicated character. I don’t take any of this for granted. When I have people over to my home, I often make a vegetable slow cooker stew or quesadillas. I’ve been a vegan since my sophomore year at Yale, and over the years it’s become a lot easier. Singing is my solace and my release, and I’m planning on doing some singing engagements when Scandal goes on hiatus this summer. I recently recorded an album that includes covers of songs by Pink, Ryan Adams, Tom Waits and Fleetwood Mac.
