BEST PICTURE

DID YOU KNOW?

At age 9, Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) is the youngest person ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. When auditioning for the role four years ago, she had to change her age on the audition sheet. Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), at age 85, is the oldest.

In order to get a gaunt appearance for his role and lose weight from his cheeks and eye area, Hugh Jackman (Les Misérables) could not drink water for 36 hours. During this time, he lost about ten pounds.

No other film event boasts as much pomp and circumstance as does the annual Oscar Awards Ceremony. Nominated and chosen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the 6,000-member panel of judges has surprised (again) with some of its decisions – where is Kathryn Bigelow? For this year’s 85th Academy Awards ceremony, a total of nine films have been nominated to receive Best Picture. At the forefront of the race is Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster film Lincoln, contending with the hostage thriller Argo, a recent top prize-winner at the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards. And although its welldeserving director was not nominated, Zero Dark Thirty, a controversial film tracing the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, remains a strong candidate along with Silver Linings Playbook, Les Misérables, and Life of Pi. Although some may be asking why Skyfall wasn’t nominated, those who enjoyed Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Django Unchained have much to anticipate. ABC will host live coverage of the Oscars on Sunday, February 24th, 2013.
