Opening Question: If you could have any other job, what would you choose? Read and Discuss: Acts 1:1-11 After Jesus has died and risen He reappears to His disciples over a period of 40 days to prepare them to fulfill the Great Commission. His training included speaking about the kingdom of God, giving them many proofs and empowering them with the Holy Spirit. They would soon be sent out on mission. 1. As a person who has been saved by grace through Jesus Christ, how would you describe your mission in this life? 2. What are some ways at Calvary that you participate in God’s mission? What are some ways that you would like to participate in God’s mission at Calvary Church? Read and Discuss: Acts 2:1-4 After Jesus’ Ascension all 120 disciples were assembled in the upper room. They were celebrating Pentecost an annual harvest festival marking 50 days after Passover. When gathered, a sound filled the house and a wind that looked like flames filled the room. Although the Holy Spirit has been active on the earth now there was a new more powerful way that the Holy Spirit was encouraging and empowering people to go on mission. The people started speaking in different languages and understanding other languages that they never heard before. The good news of Jesus was able to be heard by all people. 3. What does it say about God who gives us an impossible task, but also empowers and equips us to accomplish this task? 4. How does God continue to empower you to daily live out the mission he has called us to? (bible reading, prayer, preaching, worship, giving, suffering, sacrificing, etc.) Read and Discuss: Acts 2:14-21 After being empowered by the Holy Spirit, Peter, who initially ran away from the mission after Jesus’ death, stands up and delivers a sermon. He interprets the miracles of tongues as a fulfillment from Joel, he identifies Christ as the Messiah and he calls the people to repentance and baptism. 5. In a few sentences can you describe how Jesus saved you? What has been the significance of His death and resurrection in your life? Read and Discuss: Acts 2: 42-47 The early church had been given the mission, had a message and had empowerment, but they were not suppose to do all this by themselves. They were together. They gave to each other, served each other, and encouraged one another. 6. How has being a part of a small group helped you accomplish the mission God has asked us to be a part of?
