Big ten championships u The No. 20 University of Wisconsin
women’s swimming and diving team finished sixth with 377 points at the 2008 Big Ten Championships last weekend.
meet Highlights u UW got off to a hot start by winning the day’s first event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, in record-setting fashion. The team of seniors Hannah McClurg (San Diego, Calif.) and Jackie Vavrek (West Chicago, Ill.) and freshmen Maggie Meyer (North Oaks, Minn.) and Kelsey Gergen (Hastings, Minn.) swam to an NCAA “A” time of 1:28.51 to claim the victory. The time set a new Big Ten record, breaking the time of 1:28.80 set in 2007 by Michigan. u Another record was established in the 50-yard freestyle. Vavrek became the first Badger to win back-to-back Big Ten titles in the event in school history. She is the sixth person to do it in any event in program history. In the prelims, Vavrek actually broke the Big Ten record with a time of 22.30. The mark was actually passed later in the prelims by Andrea Hupman of Northwestern, but Vavrek came back strong and won the finals with a time of 22.36.

Sophomore Gabby Maddalena (The Woodlands, Texas) finished ninth with a time of 4:46.70, while junior Jen Illescas (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) was 12th, coming in at a time of 4:49.13. u Sophomore Candice Peak finished 11th in the 200-yard IM to lead the Badgers. She posted an NCAA “B” time of 2:02.25, breaking her own personal-best time by over one second. u Wisconsin closed things out with a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. u 1-meter diving was the lone diving event of the day. The Badgers placed two divers in the top-20 as sophomores Jenny Hawkins (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Emily Cheffins (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) finished 18th and 19th, respectively. Hawkins posted a score of 229.85, while Cheffins’ score was 229.40.
u Wisconsin earned two more “A” times with a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Meyer, Vavrek, Illescas and McClurg set a school record by completing the event in a time of 3:17.98. The time also was better than the Big Ten record, but Michigan finished .5 seconds ahead of that.
u The Badgers maintained their strong presence in the relay races with a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Meyer, Morahan, Zwiegers and Vavrek finished in an NCAA “A” time of 1:39.24.
u Meyer picked up another “A” cut for the Badgers in the event when she led off with a time of 49.34, good for a qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle. She also broke the school record set in 2002 by Sarah McCauley.
u Meyer earned her third NCAA “A” time of the weekend with her finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Meyer, who already earned “A” times in the 200-yard medley relay and in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finished the 100-yard backstroke in third with a time of 54.11.
u Maddalena notched the sixth “A” time of the night for the Badgers when she finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle. Maddalena finished the event in a time of 16:16.34.
u Wisconsin earned two NCAA “B” times in the 200-yard freestyle. Illescas finished sixth with a time of 1:48.50, while McClurg was 13th with a time of 1:49.21, a new personal-best. u Zwiegers picked up an NCAA “B” time individually with her sixth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Zwiegers swam to a time of 53.97 in the finals, while in the prelims she finished in a time of 53.81 to set a new personal-best by over a full second. u Sophomore Libby Brooks added another NCAA “B” time to the Badgers’ total with a 15th-place finish in the 400yard IM. Brooks completed the event in a time of 4:23.23. u The UW picked up its fifth “B” time of the day and 12th of the weekend with a fifth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Illescas, McClurg, Meyer, and senior Jenny Gelden (Kenosha, Wis.) finished the event in a time of 7:15.72. u Peak got things started by earning an NCAA “A” time with her fifth place finish in the 200-yard backstroke. Peak completed the event in a time of 1:57.21, besting her own previous best by over two seconds. u Meyer also earned an NCAA qualifying time in the event. She earned a “B” time with her finish of 1:57.51.
u The Badgers earned three more NCAA “B” times in the 100-yard freestyle. McClurg earned her qualifying mark by finishing in sixth place with a time of 50.04, while Vavrek was ninth with a time of 50.34. Freshman Kelsey Gergen (Hastings, Minn.) earned her “B” time by swimming in a time of 50.67 in a bonus final heat. u Wisconsin picked up two NCAA “B” times in the 200-yard butterfly. Illescas finished 11th with a time of 2:00.60, while senior Katie Imhoff-Smith (Waukesha, Wis.) was 13th with a time of 2:01.63. u Brooks picked up an NCAA “B” time in the 200-yard breaststroke. She finished the event in a time of 2:18.20, good for 14th place.

u The Badgers maintained their strong presence in the relay races with a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Meyer, Morahan, Zwiegers and Vavrek finished in an NCAA “A” time of 1:39.24.
u Meyer picked up another “A” cut for the Badgers in the event when she led off with a time of 49.34, good for a qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle. She also broke the school record set in 2002 by Sarah McCauley.
u Meyer earned her third NCAA “A” time of the weekend with her finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Meyer, who already earned “A” times in the 200-yard medley relay and in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finished the 100-yard backstroke in third with a time of 54.11.
u Maddalena notched the sixth “A” time of the night for the Badgers when she finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle. Maddalena finished the event in a time of 16:16.34.
u Wisconsin earned two NCAA “B” times in the 200-yard freestyle. Illescas finished sixth with a time of 1:48.50, while McClurg was 13th with a time of 1:49.21, a new personal-best. u Zwiegers picked up an NCAA “B” time individually with her sixth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Zwiegers swam to a time of 53.97 in the finals, while in the prelims she finished in a time of 53.81 to set a new personal-best by over a full second. u Sophomore Libby Brooks added another NCAA “B” time to the Badgers’ total with a 15th-place finish in the 400yard IM. Brooks completed the event in a time of 4:23.23. u The UW picked up its fifth “B” time of the day and 12th of the weekend with a fifth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Illescas, McClurg, Meyer, and senior Jenny Gelden (Kenosha, Wis.) finished the event in a time of 7:15.72. u Peak got things started by earning an NCAA “A” time with her fifth place finish in the 200-yard backstroke. Peak completed the event in a time of 1:57.21, besting her own previous best by over two seconds. u Meyer also earned an NCAA qualifying time in the event. She earned a “B” time with her finish of 1:57.51.
u The Badgers earned three more NCAA “B” times in the 100-yard freestyle. McClurg earned her qualifying mark by finishing in sixth place with a time of 50.04, while Vavrek was ninth with a time of 50.34. Freshman Kelsey Gergen (Hastings, Minn.) earned her “B” time by swimming in a time of 50.67 in a bonus final heat. u Wisconsin picked up two NCAA “B” times in the 200-yard butterfly. Illescas finished 11th with a time of 2:00.60, while senior Katie Imhoff-Smith (Waukesha, Wis.) was 13th with a time of 2:01.63. u Brooks picked up an NCAA “B” time in the 200-yard breaststroke. She finished the event in a time of 2:18.20, good for 14th place.
