Rahab and her Canaanite family lived in a run-down tavern near the outer wall of Jericho. At the time of this story, Jericho was a city in distress, the walls and buildings were crumbling. It was difficult for Rahab and her family to make a living, so often, Rahab prostituted herself to add to the family income. Two strangers came into the bar, asking many questions. Rahab was a clever woman and suspected that the two men were Hebrew spies, scouting for Joshua. She had heard through the grapevine that spies were in the area. Knowing that there might be an impending attack on Jericho, Rahab looked for a way to save her family. Rahab offered to hide the two spies under the condition that they save her family when it became necessary. When Canaanite soldiers came to the door, Rahab encouraged the soldiers to search the tavern. When they came up empty handed, she sent them on a wild goose chase down the road. After the soldiers left, Rahab returnd to the two spies to plead for her family’s safety. “Now then, swear to me by the Lord that as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sig, and save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” Joshua 2:12-13. The New Oxford Annotated Bible Revised Standard Version. Rahab helped the spies escape by lowering out of an upper window with a rope. The spies told her to mark her house by hanging red cord from the window they escaped from. The spies honored their agreement, and when Joshua blew his mighty horn, the walls of Jericho came tumbling down, Rahab and her family were the only ones that were saved from slaughter. Rahab was a tenacious woman with a strong survival instinct. Even though she was from the wrong side of the tracks, God used Rahab to further his Will. Rahab was smart to recognize the opportunity that presented itself, and took the measures necessary to save her family. She was rewarded for the risks she took. It is impossible to determine “who” God will choose to be His agent. Might he choose you?
