PREPARING FABRIC

FREE LOOPS OF A CHAIN

When instructed to work in free loops of a chain, work in loop indicated by arrow (Fig. 2). Fig. 2

Step 1: Wash and dry fabric according to manufacturer’s instructions. Step 2: Fold fabric in half with short end to short end, as many times as possible yet still able to cut through all thicknesses (Fig. 4). For quick results, a rotary cutter and mat may be used to cut several layers of fabric at one time. Fig. 4

JOINING FABRIC STRIPS

To join a new fabric strip to the working strip, cut a ½” slit, about ¼” from the ends of both strips (Fig. 3a). With right sides up, place end of new strip over end of working strip and match slits (Fig. 3b). Pull free end of new strip through both slits from bottom to top (Fig. 3c). Pull new strip firmly to form a small knot (Fig. 3d). Right side of both strips should be facing up. Continue working with new strip.

Step 3: Cut ¾” wide strips (Fig. 5).

Rows 5 and 6: Ch 3, turn; 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc and in each dc across changing to Light Blue in lost dc on Row 6:14 dc. Edging: Ch 1, turn; 3 sc in first dc, sc in next 5 dc, 2 sc in next dc, sc in next 6 dc, 3 sc in last dc; work 10 sc evenly spaced across end of rows; working in free loops of beginning ch (Fig. 2), 3 sc in first ch, sc in next 6 chs, 3 sc in last ch; work 10 sc evenly spaced across end of rows; join with slip st to first sc, finish off: 51 sc.

Note: When working with prints or solids where the fabric color is different on the right and wrong sides, the strip will try to twist to the wrong side. You may have to fold the strip as you work to keep the right side showing. But, let these lighter stitches show occasionally for a “tweedy” effect.
