Border communities stand up against Ice Crime Stoppers Victoria is heralding the success of the cross border Dob in a Dealer campaign run along the Murray River and Riverina region during August and September, with local communities having taken a clear stand against drugs. The cross border Dob in a Dealer program was launched in Echuca on 19 August to gather confidential information from the community about the manufacture and distribution of crystal methylamphetamine (‘ice’) and other illicit drugs. In the weeks following the launch of the cross border program in Echuca, Crime Stoppers recorded a significant spike in community information reports about possible drug activity across the region, resulting in arrests, charges being laid and drugs being seized. The campaign also saw a rise in reports across the state, with reporting on overall drug related information across Victoria increasing by 31 per cent when compared with recent weeks. The successful result of the cross border Dob in a Dealer program builds on the information already gathered in other Victorian towns. Crime Stoppers Victoria CEO Samantha Hunter thanked the local communities along the Murray River and Riverina region for their assistance and heralded the results as a significant step toward disrupting the supply of drugs into the region. “Drugs like crystal methylamphetamine have devastating consequences for regional Victorian towns, placing pressure on police, emergency service workers, drug counsellors and public health specialists.” Ms Hunter said. “The response to the cross border Dob in a Dealer program from local residents has been significant, and the increase in phone and online reports shows how concerned local communities are about drug activity in the region. “Information from the community leads to real results when it comes to breaking the cycle of crime, and the information gathered over the period of the campaign has been passed on to the police for further enquiry. “While the Dob in a Dealer program will now shift focus to other towns across the state, Crime Stoppers
