Chevron, one of the world's largest oil companies, has worked hard to create the image that it is an environmentally-conscious corporation. However, just as George Bush proclaimed himself to be the "environmental President," the truth differs significantly from the corporate image. Chevron is a member of the Environmental Grantmakers' Association and boasts of its contributions to groups such as The Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited, and the Trust for Public Land. It also sponsors a Conservation Awards Program to recognize the environmental work of outstanding individuals. Chevron earned profits of over $2 billion in 1992 and reported giving over $25 million in contributions to a wide range of non-profit organizations last year, including $1.3 million to "environmental" organizations. But a closer look reveals that many of these Chevron-funded groups are actually radical right wing anti-environmental front groups.
