THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: During this unit, your child will study the last days Jesus spent on earth and how He helped people. Use the APPLY activities at the end of each story to help your child apply what he or she has learned. ®

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY JESUS’ SPECIAL SUPPER JESUS CHOSE HELPERS God’s Son, Jesus, walked beside a big lake called the Sea of Galilee. He saw two brothers, Simon Peter and Andrew, fishing. “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said. “I want you to be My helpers (disciples).” Simon Peter and Andrew at once stopped fishing and went with Jesus. Jesus saw two different brothers, James and John, working in their father’s boat. Jesus said, “Come, follow Me.” James and John stopped working and went with Jesus. Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John became Jesus’ first helpers. They traveled with Jesus to help Him. All together, Jesus chose 12 men to be His helpers. These 12 men included Peter and his brother Andrew, James and his brother John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, another man named James, Thaddaeus, Simon, and Judas. LIFE VERSE: Matthew 16:16 LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: Jesus is God’s Son.

APPLY: Play a counting game with your preschooler. Set out 12 objects—small blocks, bottle caps, counting chips. Help your child count to 12. Comment that Jesus chose 12 helpers. They helped people know about God and Jesus.

One day Jesus told two of His helpers (disciples) to get everything ready for a special supper. “Where do You want us to prepare the supper?” they asked. Jesus said, “Go into the city. You will meet a man. Tell him that I want to eat a special supper with My helpers at his house.” Jesus’ helpers did what Jesus told them to do. They got everything ready for the special supper. When it was time to eat, Jesus and His helpers sat at the table. Jesus took some bread. He thanked God for it. Jesus tore the bread into pieces. He gave some bread to each helper. Then Jesus took a cup and said thank you to God. Jesus shared a drink from the cup with each helper. Jesus wanted His helpers to always remember this special supper they had together. He told His helpers to always remember the things He did for them. LIFE VERSE: Matthew 16:16 LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: Jesus taught people about God.

APPLY: Help your child remember Jesus and the things He did. Turn through the pages of a Bible with pictures, such as the Read to Me Bible for Kids. Talk about Jesus and the Bible stories represented by the pictures.

Jesus and His helpers were on their way to Jerusalem. Jesus told two of His helpers, “Go to the next town. You will find a young donkey and its mother. Bring them to Me.” The helpers did what Jesus told them to do. They found the donkeys and brought them to Jesus. The helpers spread their coats on the young donkey’s back to make a soft place for Jesus to sit. Jesus climbed onto the donkey’s back and rode into Jerusalem. Along the way, many people were waiting to see Jesus. When they saw Him coming, some people spread their coats on the road. Others cut branches from trees and spread them across the road. The people knew Jesus was special. They knew that God had kept His promise and sent Jesus into the world. As Jesus passed by, the happy people shouted, “Hosanna! Hosanna!” LIFE VERSE: Matthew 16:16 LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: Jesus is God’s Son.

APPLY: Use time driving in the car, waiting in line, or playing outside to praise Jesus with your preschooler. Sing simple praise songs such as “God Is So Good” or play some preschool songs on a CD. Tell your child, “Jesus is God’s Son.”

JESUS IS ALIVE! Three days after Jesus died on the cross, Mary and another Mary went to the place where Jesus was buried. An earthquake shook the ground as an angel from God came to the tomb. He rolled back the stone and sat on it. The angel spoke to the two women, “Don’t be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus. He is not here! He is alive, just as He said. Come see where He was laying. Then go and tell His helpers (disciples), ‘He is alive!’ ” The women left quickly and ran to tell the helpers. Jesus met and greeted the women. The women went up to Jesus and touched His feet. Jesus told them to not be afraid and to tell the helpers (disciples) to go to Galilee where they would see Him. LIFE VERSE: 1 John 4:14 LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: Jesus died on the cross and is alive.

APPLY: Talk to your child about the Bible story. Remind her that the women went to a garden to find Jesus. Give your child paper and crayons. Tell her to draw some flowers on the paper. Print Jesus Is Alive! at the top of the paper.

JESUS MET TWO DISCIPLES ON THE ROAD Two men walked on the road to a town called Emmaus (eh MAY uhs). This was just a few miles from Jerusalem. The men talked and argued about the events of the past week. As they walked, a man joined them. This man was Jesus, but the men did not recognize Jesus. Jesus asked the men why they were arguing. The men began to tell Jesus about the events of the past few days: “Jesus died on a cross. Three days later some women went to the tomb. The tomb was empty. An angel said that He was alive!” As they came near Emmaus, the men asked Him to stay with them. He did. The men still did not know He was Jesus. As the men sat at the table, Jesus took bread, prayed over it, and tore it to share with the men. Then the men understood that it was Jesus sitting at their table! The men returned to Jerusalem that night to find Jesus’ helpers (disciples). The men told the helpers they had seen Jesus. He was alive! LIFE VERSE: 1 John 4:14 LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: Jesus died on the cross and is alive.

APPLY: Help your child say the Life Verse, “God sent Jesus.” 1 John 4:14. Remind your child that Jesus lives in heaven with God. Pray, thanking God for Jesus.

BREAKFAST WITH JESUS One evening, Peter, John, and some other disciples went fishing on the Sea of Galilee. They fished all night long but did not catch anything. The helpers saw a man standing on the shore. The man called out to them, “Friends, don’t you have any fish?” “No,” the helpers answered. “Throw your net on the right side of the boat,” the man said. The fishermen threw their net down on the right side of the boat. When they tried to pull up the net, it was so full of fish that they could not lift it into the boat! John told Peter, “That man is Jesus!” When Peter heard this, he jumped into the water and swam to shore. The other men followed him in the boat, dragging the net full of fish. When the helpers reached the shore, they saw a fire, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said, “Bring some of the fish you have caught.” Peter dragged the net to shore. The net was full of 153 large fish! “Come and eat breakfast,” Jesus said. He gave bread and fish to His friends. LIFE VERSE: 1 John 4:14 LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: Jesus did things people cannot do. APPLY: Put some plastic fish in a tub of water. Give your child an aquarium net to catch the fish. Comment that Jesus helped His friends to catch some fish.

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: During this unit, your child will hear stories about six people from the Bible who help us know how to live. Use the APPLY activities at the end of each story to help your child apply what he or she has learned. ®

JESUS AND THE WOMAN AT THE WELL MIRIAM AND MOSES ABRAM AND LOT Abram loved God. God led him and his family and all his animals to live in the desert. His nephew, Lot, went with him. Lot also had a family, helpers, and animals. Abram and Lot lived in tents so they could move from place to place. Abram’s and Lot’s animals needed grass and water to drink. Their workers eat to began to quarrel with each other about the grass and the water. Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not quarrel or fight with one another. We are part of the same family.” Then Abram said, “Let’s divide the land.” So Lot looked and chose the land near the Jordan River. Abram took his family and animals in the other direction toward Canaan. God spoke to Abram and told him to look in every direction. God said, “I will give this land to you and your children forever. Your family will be so big that you cannot count them.” Abram thanked God for the land God had given him. Abram was glad that he and Lot had worked together as a family. LIFE VERSE: John 14:15 LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: God gives rules to help me know what to do.

APPLY: Let your child begin to make his own choices. He could choose what clothes to wear, choose a snack, and other appropriate choices for his age. This will lead to making good choices as he is older.

Miriam’s family had a new baby boy. Miriam helped her mother take care of the baby. The king of their country did not want baby boys to live. So Miriam and her family hid the baby for three months. As the baby grew, Miriam’s family had to think of a way to keep the baby safe. Miriam’s mother got a basket. She covered it with sticky tar to help keep water out of the basket. Miriam’s mother laid the baby in the basket. She placed the basket in the tall grass near the edge of the river. Miriam stayed nearby to watch her baby brother. As the king’s daughter walked beside the river, she saw the basket. She and her helpers opened the basket and saw the baby. He was crying. She felt sorry for him. Miriam went to the king’s daughter and asked, “Do you want me to get someone to take care of the baby for you?” “Yes, go,” answered the king’s daughter. Miriam ran and got her mother. Miriam’s mother was happy to take care of her own baby. When the boy was older, the king’s daughter named him Moses. LIFE VERSE: john 14:15 LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: God will always love me.

APPLY: Print the OBEY in large letters on a sheet of white paper. Give your child dot painters to paint on the word. Comment that the word obey means doing what God says.

Jesus and His helpers (disciples) traveled through the land of Samaria. Jesus knew the Jewish and Samaritan people did not like each other, but He chose to rest in Samaria. Jesus was tired and thirsty. His helpers went into town to buy food. A Samaritan woman came to get water from the well. Jesus asked her for a drink. The Samaritan woman was surprised that a Jewish man would ask her for a drink. Jesus told the woman about God. The woman was interested in what Jesus said but did not understand it all. She said, “I know that God will send someone who will explain everything about God to us.” Jesus told the woman, “I am He.” The helpers (disciples) were surprised to find Jesus talking with the Samaritan woman. The woman left and went into town to tell everyone that she had spoken with Jesus. The people came to see the man the woman talked about—Jesus, God’s Son. LIFE VERSE: John 14:15 LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: God wants family members to be kind to one another.

APPLY: Sit on the floor with your preschooler. Clap and chant the following: “K-I-N-D, I can be kind.” Then ask your child how she can be kind using her hands. Clap and chant again, asking about being kind with her voice and feet.

ZECHARIAH A church helper (priest) named Zechariah had a wife named Elizabeth. Both of them loved God very much and obeyed His commands. Zechariah was chosen to enter the temple (church) and build a fire that made good-smelling smoke. When people saw the smoke rise from the temple, they prayed. An angel appeared to Zechariah while he was in the temple. The angel told Zechariah that his wife would give birth to a son whom they would name John. Zechariah could not believe this would happen because he and his wife were older. The angel, named Gabriel, then said that Zechariah would not be able to speak until after the baby was born because Zechariah did not believe the angel’s words. Zechariah left the temple and could not talk to the people. Even though Zechariah could not speak, Elizabeth was very happy and knew God was giving her a child to be born.

PETER

LIFE VERSE: Deuteronomy 30:20

Peter was one of Jesus’ disciples. He followed Jesus and loved Jesus. But one night Peter made a wrong choice. A young girl came to Peter and asked if he was one of Jesus’ followers and a disciple. Peter said no. Peter chose to say he was not with Jesus. Later, as Peter warmed himself by a fire, a group of people asked if he was one of Jesus’ helpers. Again, Peter said that he was not. Then a third person asked the same question, and Peter said no a third time. He was afraid he would get in trouble for being Jesus’ friend. Some time later, after Jesus died on the cross and then came back to life, Jesus made breakfast for His helpers. When everyone had finished eating, Jesus Himself asked Peter three times if Peter loved Him. This time Peter told the truth. Three times Peter said that he loved Jesus. Jesus then told Peter to follow Him and learn from Him.

LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: God wants people to do what He says.

LIFE VERSE: Deuteronomy 30:20

APPLY: Wrap a baby doll in a blanket and tell your child to rock the doll. Comment that an angel told Zechariah his wife would have a baby. The name of the baby would be John

LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: Jesus wants people to love Him.

APPLY: Help your child say the Life Verse, “Love God and always do what He says.” Deuteronomy 30:20. Remind your child that God wants us to love Jesus.

SAUL Saul was a mean person who hurt people who loved Jesus. As he walked on the road to the town of Damascus, a light flashed around him. He heard a voice call his name. That voice was Jesus, who spoke and told Saul to go into Damascus. Saul could not see for three days, and he did not eat or drink for three days. Jesus then spoke to a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. He told Ananias to go to Saul and place his hands on him so he could see again. Even though Ananias was afraid of Saul, Ananias found Saul and placed his hands on him. Ananias told Saul that Jesus had sent him to give Saul his sight. Saul was able to see again. He ate, and his strength returned. Saul then went and told people about Jesus. Many people were scared of Saul still. Barnabas, though, took Saul in. Barnabas began to tell how Jesus spoke to Saul on the Damascus road and now Saul spoke in love and peace for Jesus. LIFE VERSE: Deuteronomy 30:20 LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: God gives rules to help me know what to do. APPLY: Ask your child how he would respond to certain situations, such as if a friend hits him, someone took his toy, or someone cut in line. Comment that God helps people know what to do.
