Rapid Setting Low Permeability Bridge Deck Overlays Chris Davis April 23, 2014 NBPPC

Introduction LMC Overlays have been used since 1969 to improve, protect and preserve bridges. Due to increased traffic, the time allowed for bridge repairs has been greatly reduced. LMC overlays using a very early hardening cement has been used since 1995(LMC-VE).

Procedure LMC Overlay  Install concrete barriers and traffic control  Mill deck  Repair Deck  Shotblast / Waterblast deck  Place overlay  Cure 48 hours wet, 48 hours dry  Remove all traffic protection

Procedure LMC-VE Overlay       

Close lane at 9 pm Mill deck Repair deck (if necessary) Shotblast / Waterblast deck Place LMC-VE 2am-3am Cure LMC-VE 3am-6am Open lane 6am

Low P FA 1  Since 2009 there have been overlays installed using a polymer modified cement concrete.  It gains strength quickly  It has the same properties as LMC-VE but does not require liquid latex.
