Praise Overflowing After the angel Gabriel told her that she would have a baby, Mary traveled from Nazareth to the home of her relative, Elizabeth. Gabriel had told Mary that Elizabeth, an old woman, was also expecting a child. Elizabeth’s husband, Zechariah, didn’t believe the angel who told him about their child. Because of that doubt, Zechariah was not able to speak until after the baby was born. (Read Luke 1:11-20 to learn about Gabriel’s visit to Zechariah.)   As soon as Mary arrived, Elizabeth greeted her: “You are the most blessed of women, and your child will be blessed!” She told Mary that her baby had leaped for joy inside her when Jesus’ mother approached. All Zechariah could do was look on quietly.   When Mary heard these words, she did not think more highly of herself. Instead, she gave praise to God. “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,” she said, beginning a lengthy poem of praise. We don’t know what else Mary and Elizabeth did or said to each other during those days. We do know, though, that Zechariah could not audibly contribute to their conversations. –Based on Luke 1:39-56
