BUCKLER’S MEAD ACADEMY First Aider Grade 15 (£8,369 per annum starting salary) (25 hours per week, term time only) _________________________________________________________________ THE ACADEMY Buckler’s Mead Academy is an 11 – 16 mixed comprehensive academy located in Yeovil, Somerset with approximately 850 students on roll. Buckler’s Mead is very popular in the local area and enjoys a good reputation. The last Section 5 Ofsted inspection took place in September 2014. The academy was judged as good overall and in all four sections: Achievement, Behaviour, Leadership and Management and Teaching. Some key points from the report:
The academy has implemented the priorities for improvement identified at the last inspection well. There have been notable improvements in teaching in English and Mathematics. The progress of students with identified special educational needs has improved The headteacher and senior leaders are successfully driving the improvement in teaching and achievement with the full support of the staff The academy’s records of the academic progress of students show an improving trend. That improvement has led to a rise in attainment Teachers insist on high standards of behaviour and the students respond well to their guidance. As a result, students have a positive attitude to learning. When there are incidents of poor behaviour they are dealt with well There has been effective work to keep students safe, and to promote values that are appropriate for modern British life The academy is using resources well to improve the progress of disadvantaged students The academy directors know the academy well. They provide a good level of support and challenge that contributes to the academy’s improvement.

Levels of attendance have improved and are now above the national average. Exclusion is far lower than national. The staff are welcoming and very loyal to the academy. They enable the academy to provide a wide range of trips and extra-curricular activities which are well attended. We have a policy of investing in staff with support, care and training, and are recognised “Investors in People”, having been seven times awarded the prestigious national accolade for the quality of our staff development and personnel practices. WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR? We wish to recruit someone to provide medical support for students and staff in the academy. You will be based in the main office but have access to a medical room which is equipped with medical supplies, a telephone and a laptop. This is a very busy post, dealing with day to day sickness and occasional sports injuries. We also have a small number of students with more challenging medical conditions and you will be required to provide support for them. Full training will be given and you will be required to complete a First Aid course before you can take over this role. This is a vital role within the academy and a great opportunity for someone who likes a variety of tasks and challenges to join our excellent team. Because of the varied nature of the tasks that are associated with this role, a key requirement will be an enthusiastic person with sound common sense who likes to be busy, work hard, take responsibility and show initiative whilst maintaining a sense of humour! You will need to be highly organised with strong interpersonal and communication skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy. The ability to work under pressure and keep calm in a crisis is essential and of course you need to have a genuine interest in working with and supporting young people. The role involves contact with many staff, students and parents so a friendly, helpful personality is required. A knowledge of medical practices is essential for the role and experience of working in an education environment would be advantageous. A knowledge of the SIMs system would also be helpful but training will be given. THE POST Duties of the role will include:
Administering First Aid and medicine as required in accordance with academy and Government policy. Storing and administering medication and ordering First Aid supplies as required. Accurate and up to date records of all students’ medical information, treatments and minor bumps and bruises. Liaising with staff, parents and medical personnel to ensure that relevant people are updated about all medical and incidental information. Working within Child Protection procedures and awareness of Child Protection issues. Ensuring strict confidentiality of all student and medical information. General administrative tasks to support the main office at times when you are not required in the medical room. Management of the parcel delivery system within the academy.
There will be a supportive induction programme and relevant training to help integrate the successful candidate into the academy environment.
