THE GAME

South Carolina State (1-0) will have little time to savor its hardfought 34-31 victory over then number one-ranked (Sheridan Broadcasting Network) Grambling Sunday (Sept. 6) as Coach Buddy Pough’s team has only six days to prepare for its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener against BethuneCookman (0-1) on Saturday (Sept. 12) at Daytona Beach’s Municipal Stadium. Kickoff for the MEAC showdown is 4 p.m. The Wildcats are coming off a 20-6 upset loss to Shaw. Saturday’s match up against Coach Alvin Wyatt’s team, which will also be playing in its MEAC opener, will mark back-to-back trips for the Bulldogs to the Sunshine State. Last Sunday’s SC State win over Grambling came at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando in the 5th MEAC/SWAC Challenge. SC State, the defending MidEastern Athletic champion, lived up to its lofty preseason rankings with its victory over Grambling. Pough’s team was ranked 16th in both major Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) polls and was number two in the SBN poll behind Grambling, last year’s Black College national champion. Pough and his team will take the victory, but Saturday’s contest is more important as SC State would like to get off to a winning start in the MEAC, which the Bulldogs have been predicted to win for a third straight season. SC State will be trying for its third straight win over the Wildcats, who were fourth in the MEAC preseason poll, behind the Bulldogs,

Florida A&M and Hampton. Pough’s team won 28-19 in the Low Country Classic at Charleston last season and was victorious 24-13 in its last trip to Daytona Beach in 2007. The Wildcats’ last victory in the rivalry came in 2006, 45-21, at Charleston. The Bulldogs have won four of the last five meetings, however, prior to the SC State streak, the Wildcats had won four in a row. Overall, the Bulldogs hold a 27-7 edge in the rivalry. Coach Pough and his staff expect a stiff contest against the Wildcats, who will be anxious to put last Saturday’s 20-6 upset loss to Shaw behind them. Wyatt’s team lost six fumbles and suffered one interception in the

setback. In its win over Grambling, SC State had just one turnover, a fumble, however, it led to a Grambling touchdown. The Bulldogs, meanwhile recovered three Tiger fumbles, blocked a punt and got a key interception in the final two minutes to preserve the win. Pough’s team had to overcome the loss of junior starting quarterback Malcolm Long, who left the game early in the third quarter after becoming dehydrated. Reserve signal caller Derrick Wiley, a redshirt freshman, stepped in and directed two scoring drives to hold off the Tigers.

Pough became the 14th head cated the 9-2 record of the previous year and football coach at South Carolina State in the fall improved to 7-1 in the MEAC, with the lone of 2002, taking over the reins from legendary league loss coming at the hands of eventual

champion and nationally-ranked Hampton. Prior to taking the reins at South Carolina State, Pough spent five seasons as an assistant at the University of South Carolina (USC), the last three as a running backs coach under Lou Holtz. During his stint at USC, he helped build the Gamecocks into one of the top offensive teams in the SEC. USC made back-to-back appearances in the Outback Bowl in 2000 and 2001. Before going to USC, Pough was on of the top high school coaches in the Palmetto State, leading Fairfield-Central to a perfect 150 record in 1996 and claiming the Class AAA state title. He earned South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) Coach-of-the-Year honors for his efforts, the first of such three honors. Pough also had coaching stints at Keenan High in Columbia, where he built the Raiders into one of the top Class AAA teams in the state. An Orangeburg native and former offensive lineman for SC State, Pough helped the Bulldogs amass a 16-6-1 record during the 1974 and 1975 seasons, a span in which SC State suffered just two MEAC losses and captured a pair of league titles. After graduating in 1975, he joined the staff at nearby Orangeburg-Wilkinson High (197679), before returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 1979. The Bulldogs made consecutive trips to the Div. 1-AA playoffs (1981 & 1982) during his tenure as an assistant. Pough and his wife, Josie, are the parents of two sons—Oliver, IV (Bud), a former wide receiver at The Citadel, and Lee Judson, a student at SC State.

ALVIN WYYATT The 2009 season will be Wyatt's 13th as head coach of the Wildcats. He was named the school's ninth head football coach on November 27, 1996 following the retirement of legendary head coach and now Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Jack "Cy" McClairen. He became the sixth B-CU alumnus to take over the Wildcats football program - and he has risen to become among the top winners in the FCS coaches ranks with a top 20 standing in winning percentage (.653) 85-48 overall. He came back "home" so to speak, in 1975 as an assistant coach and later the defensive coordinator for the Wildcats under former teammate and Hall of Fame football star Larry Little. As a defensive coordinator, Wyatt helped the `Cats in winning the 1984 MEAC title, as well as a runner-up finish in 1985. The `Cats went on to earn the title again in 1988 with a three-way tie at the top with Delaware State and Florida A&M. Wyatt first made his mark on the gridiron as a standout for the Wildcats from 1966-69 by earning himself All-America honors and All-SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) accolades during his more than illustrious career. A standout defensive back nicknamed "SHINE" by his teammates and coaching staff, Wyatt set numerous school and conference records, including 34 career interceptions and a 100-yard kickoff return--one of only three players to do so at Bethune-Cookman. His current mark of five interceptions in a game still stands as a Bethune-Cookman record, as well as listing Wyatt as first all-time in career interceptions and second for picks in a single season (13 in 1969). He also returned kicks at Bethune-Cookman for an average of 25.9 yards per punt return.

2009 BULLDOG OUTLOOK The Bulldogs endured some heavy losses from last season’s MEAC Championship and FCS playoff team. Coach Pough and his staff will be without eighteen (18) seniors, 11 of them starters; however SC State welcomes back 45 lettermen from that outstanding squad, which was 10-3 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the MEAC. Among the returning lettermen are 13 regulars, six on offense Thus, with 13 starters back, among them All-America and AllConference running back Will Ford, and nine other All-MEAC players, the Bulldogs will have a great nucleus to work with as they seek to nab back-to-back conference titles for the first time since the 1982 and 1983 seasons.

touchdowns with sixteen (16). And, the return of three starters on the offensive line, including AllMEAC performer Johnny Culbreath (6-6, 300 Jr.) means the SC State offense -- which has been the most productive in the league over the last four seasons – is expected to be very solid once more.

#3

OLIVER “TRE’” YOUNG

Senior Oliver (Tre’) Young (6-1, 180 Sr.), who topped the team in receptions last year with 48, spearheads the 2009 receiving corps that will also include top reserves Matt Washington (6-2, 180 Sr.) and Richard Christie (5-11, 175 Jr.).

#28

WILLIAM FORD

Ford (5-11, 200 Sr.), who galloped for almost 1500 yards, and Long (63, 235 Jr.), who as a sophomore, set school records for passing yards and completions, will be joined in the Bulldog backfield by Travil Jamison (6-0, 200 Sr.), who led the team in

#5

Safety Markee Hamlin (6-0, 185 Sr.), a two-time All-MEAC selection, linebacker Marshall McFadden (6-2, 230 Sr.), a second-team all-conference pick last year, safety (Rafael Bush (5-11, 180 Sr.) and cornerback Phillip Adams (6-1, 190 Sr.) spearhead a defense that will also include returning starter Markus James (6-2, 230 Sr.) and standout reserves Matt Key (6-2, 280 Sr.) and Jayson Ayers (6-3, 250 Jr.) on the defensive line, ensuring that the Bulldogs will be strong on defense once more.

PHILLIP ADAMS

The placce kicking chores should be in good hands also with the return of place kicker Blake Erickson, however, Pough and his staff will have to replace punter Aaron Haire, who opted to go to medical school despite having a year of eligibility left. Redshirt Leigh Manley will be the likely replacement, with Erickson as the backup.
