After a shaky 2-7-2 start to the 2012 season, Johnson guided the Leathernecks to a 5-2-3 record the rest of the way en route to the team’s second straight Summit League crown. The team battled from seventh in the conference standings up to third, and upset both of the top-seeded teams in the Summit League Tournament to clinch a spot in the College Cup, where Western suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Northwestern. Johnson’s Leatherneck squads have also captured the Summit League Tournament titles in 2011, 2009, 2006, 2005 and 2004, with Nathan Bruinsma being named the most recent Summit League Tournament MVP, as well as AllMidwest Region.
